Condon children will toon again - be wending their way to and from -f the school room. The opening day of the school year has been set for September 14 in Condon, Mayville and Arlington, while on September 7 the school bell will call the children of Blalock to their Btudies. At Olex, school begins on the 21st but Lone Rock and Clem will not be ready until October 5th. The fall term at St Thomas ' Aquinas School begins Septem ber & With the mothers this will be a busy week for the little tots must be made ready for the occasion. Many new school books will have to be purchased and the father of the household will be in a position to increase the day's happiness by buying brand-new books, pretty writing tablets, new slates and other necessary paraphernalia. Everything is practically ready for the county high school, the county court having decided on the arrangements the first of .frfwfte week. It was agreed that three rooms of the court house would be used until the high school building is erected the county judge's office on the' low er floor, the district attorney's and the county surveyor's on the upper floor. The rooms are well ' lighted, roomy and comfortable. The high school teachers are: City Superintendent J. C Stur- gill who will have charge of certain classes in sciences and mathematics; Miss Scott of Eu gene, will teach language and English; Miss Thiessen of Ar lington, instuctorin history, mathematics and sciences. Four hundred dollars worth of apparatus for the laboratories has been purchased and the consignment is due to arrive here at any time. The desks for these rooms will be taken from the upper rooms of the main school building, as the grade which was instructed last year in the Christian church . (Urf , building will be taught in the main building. The teachers for the grammar grades are: Miss Hazel Seeley, of Independence, 8th grade; Mrs. J. A. Rar.dall, 7t grade; Mrs.! Searcy, Cth and 5th grades; Miss Gertrude Brehaut, 4th and 3rd grades. In the old school build ing, two grades will be taught MissM. E. Murphy is to have charge of the second grade and Miss Belle Ranney of the first Barn Changes Hands. J. J. Portwood has rented his livery and feed barn to Dan Hil debrand, the drayman. Mr. Hildebrand will take charge of the business on the 10th of this month and will continue in the transfer business. Mr. Port wood who has conducted the liv- ln ery stable for the last three years W will rest for a few months before engaging in other lines oi dusi ness. Norvel, editor of the Ar lington Record, accompanied by Mrs. Norvel, were in Condon last Friday afternoon and re turned home the following morn ing. This was their first vhit to the Wheat City and were im favorably impressed with' appearance of Condon, naturally they missed the shade trees of Arlington's Main street but found that the weather was cooler than at their home town. The editor has been kept quite busy since taking charge of the Rec ord and never had the time to come to the county seat While here Mr. and Mrs. Norvel called at the court house and the Globe office and "took in the sights." Mr. Norvel is an Arlington booster, not of the noisy, dem onstrative sort however. He be lieves in his home town and never fails to tay a good word for it He said that rumors were afloat to make Arlington the center of an irrigation project which is to take in a considerable area. BEGIN WORK ON flGflDEMY Contractor Bayli&s and Men Arrive Tomorrow Work Starts Monday. Contracts for the construction of the new home for the St. Thomas Aquinas Academy were signed the first . of the week while Contractor J. N. Bayliss, of . Portland, was in the city. This assures to Condon one of the handsomest school buildings in Eastern Oregon. The struc ture will be of the old Spanish Mission style and will practically be a four-story building, since the basement which is of stone, is to be conveniently appointed and divided into a number of well-lighted rooms. The attic, too. will be arranged so as to be used in case of emergency. The structure will be built of Condon MAYVILLE FAIR NOTES Mayville. Or. August 30. (To the Globe.) The Executive committee of the Gilliam and Wheeler County Grange Fair met at Mayville for the purpose of perfecting arrangements lor tne the fair. Committee on sports S. H. Edwards, Fred Stinchfield, and Art Beeson; Committee on dance-Mike Dukek, E. G. Pal mer and Geo. Gibbons, Sr. Ar rangements were also made for distributing the premium lists. The coming of the new trolley line, and bear it in mind it's coming sooner or later, will greatly enhance real estate values in Condon. A very pretty wedding took place at the cozy home of John Adams, one of the moHt prom inent business men of Oregon City last Wednesday when Mr. Adams' sister, Miss Charlotte Adams was united in marriage to S. B. Couture, of this city. bride is a young woman of amiable disposition and is known to a large number of people in Condon and vicinity, having been in this city as a nurse from the Portland hospitals. Mr. Couture is one of Condon's substantial citizens having re sided in Gilliam connty for a a number of years. He recently engaged in the fuel business. After a brief honeymoon trip to Spokane, Mr. and Mrs. Cout ure will return to this city where the groom has had a most invit ing home made ready for Mrs. Couture. The Globe joins the many friends of the happy couple in extending congratulations and best wishes for their happiness. made red bricks and equipped with modem conveniences. Contractor Bayliss, in speak ing to a Globe representative, stated that the work would be started next Monday and that he expected to have the building ready for occupancy by the first of the year. Mr. Bayliss left Monday for valley points to ar range for shipments of lumber, lime and other materials, expect ing to return Saturday evening with a number of masons and carpenters. Mall Agent on Heppnar Branch The mail service on the Hepp- ner branch of the O. R. & N. is to be improved by the addition of a mail clerk. A new, up-to-date mail car has already arrived and the agent will be here in a short time to take charge of the worK, As soon as the service is in stalled letters can be mailed on the train and the mail service will be generally improved. Forward, build, is the order. Doc Brown has rented the Baptist parsonage for the winter ana took possession this week. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Beckon have rented the Hughes resid ence for the winter. James W. Church, of the Gil liam County mills, expects to move his family, from Portland the first of next week. They will occupy the J. W. Hire house. Hayes Marble has moved his furniture from the Reisacher building into the house north of the Baptist parsonage. Mrs. Marble is expected nome the first of next week from Vancou ver where she has been visiting her parents, flf Clem Will Drill Well This Week AT A COST DF 6,000 PDLUS Building Oparatlona Making Rapid Progress School House to ba Ready October 6th. Clem is still growing, you had better "watch it" . The little city in the midst of the wheat fields, has decided to have a water system and within a month it will be installed. W. Jost, the Clem merchant, while in Condon the fore part of the week and speaking to the Globe representative said: "We' re going to have a water system right away. A carload of coal has been ordered for the big well driller and as soon as it ar rives John McEacheron will have his machine throwing up dirt The new well is to be located near the old well next to the county road. " Mr. Jost went on to say that $6000 had been t ec ured from Portland men to carry on the work and that within a month pipes would be laid to every house in town. It is thought that the depth of the well will be about 4000 feet &nd a 10-horse gasoline eng .; e will be used as motive power to pump the water. When the water systejn is completed Clem will be well protected against fire. When asked as to the building operations now in progress in his town, Mr. Jost replied that every thing was progressing satisfact orily. The new school house is to be plastered and will not be ready for occupancy before tne hrst of October. The Globe i3 in receipt of a photo-card from "Jerry" Harts horn dated from Traer, Iowa, where the popular publisher of The Globe has been spending several months at his old home. It shows that Jerry has been inoculated with the base ball ba cilli and that he is playing on the Traer nine, which claims the amateur championship of Iowa. He has been pitching for the Traer team and has gotten back to his old-time form and "delw ered the coods" in great shape, according to the Traer Clipper, in a recent game, which resulted in a score of 2 to 1.
