W. F. Jackson. As the campaign draws to a close the strength of the nominees on the state Republican ticket be comes more and more pro nnnnrml and the DODularity of of the candidacies of Hon. H. M, Cake, of.Portland, and of Hon, W. iR. Ellis, of Pendleton, is crowincr to such an extent as to cniise Alarm in the ranks of the oDDOsition. When the battle of the ballots is over next Monday night the Republican ticket will have received one of the nana somest majorities ever recorded in the political annals of the state. In this splendid victory Gilliam county will have had glorious part. Among the initiative measures to be voted upon next Monday is one for the creation of a new county out of the territory of Wasco county, to ..be known as Hood River county. Since the people of Wasco county are wil ling that the new county should be formed and that the people of the Hood River country wi assume the burdens and respons ibilities connected with its crea tion, the measure will naturally receive a biz vote. There is no opposition to the bill and even The Dalles which in former years fought the movement for the creation of a new county is now favorable to it. Vote, Yes. Announcement of W. J. Bur- dett for District Attorney for the Eleventh Judicial District I hereby announce myself as an independent candidate for the of fice of District Attorney for the Eleventh Judicial District com prising the counties of Gilliam, Sherman and Wheeler for the el ection to be held June 1, 1908. If elected I will -during my term of office work faithfully for all the people, I will wage war on criminals, friends and foes alike, without regard to politics, posi tion or station in life. As to my qualifications, I will say that I am a graduate from the law department of the Uni versity of Michigan at Ann Ar bor, graduating in 1903 and have been engaged in actual practice ever since that time. I am not allied to any clique, combination or faction of any kind or sort, but am independent in the fullest sense of the word, I solicit the votes of the peopl of all parties who believe in "Government of the people, for the people and by the people' and hereby pledge myself to car ry out the wishes of the people, if elected. James E. Buroett. as I hereby announce myself an independent candidate for the office of Joint Senator for the Eighteenth Senatorial District, comprising the counties of Gil liam, Sherman and Wheeler, for the election to be held on June 1, 1908. If elected I will, during my term of office, work faithfully for the best interests of all the people all the time. I have faith in the people, and believe in the will of the people, and therefore, during my term of office, if elected, I will always vote for that candidate for United States Senator who has received the highest number of the people's votes for that position, at the general election, next preceding the election of a Senator in Con gress, without regard to his poli tics, or my individual preference. I am not allied to any clique, combination or faction, and I de sire that the people shall say whom I shall vote for for United States Senator. I solicit the votes of the people of all parties who believe in Statement No. 1; or in other words, of all voters who believe in "Government of the people, by the people and for the peo ple." W. J. Edwards. To The Voters of the 28th Rep resentative District: An error made in preparing my petitions, discovered too late to correct, leaves my name off the official primary ballot The only recourse left is to run as an Independent at the June election, This I have decided to do. Am not allied with any exist ing faction and know of no rea son why if elected I should not co-operate freely with the dis trict delegation to be elected in June concerning all matters that may subserve the interests of the people of this district as well as those of the state at large.
