Win Shear 40,000 Sheep. . fcneep - shearing began at Smythe & Smith's plant five miies south of Arlirurton todav. Sixteen shearing machines will be used, the power being fur nished by a six-horsepower gas line engine. Forty thousand sheep will be sheared at this plant this season and an average of 2,000 head daily is expected. Sheepmen report that that the aheep are in good condition, but tnat pasture is getting scarce. This has been one of the most successful lambing seasons known, but few lambs being lost from any cause. To The Voters of the 28th Rep resentative District: An error made in preparing my petitions, discovered too late to correct, leaves my name off the official primary ballot. The only recourse left is to run as an Independent at the June election. This I have decided to do. Shall be pleased to consider ballots cast for me at the primary elec . tion as an endorsement of the action taken; and not as votes to nominate'-" " Am not allied with anv exist ing faction and know of no rea- Bin why if elected I should not co-operate freely with the dis trict delegation to be elected in June concerning all matters that may subserve the interests of the people of this district as well as those of the state at large. - Wm. J. Mariner. To the Voters. In asking the Republican elec tors of Gilliam county for the nomination as County School Superintendent, I believe that a few facts concerning my school work and qualifications are due, that the voters may be able ' to decide intelligently. I have been engaged in the school work in Oregon during the past ten years and during that time have taught in both city and country schools, thus obtainine a cood in sight into the requirements .Of both city and country schools. - The leading educators of this state have have given me strong recommendations as an able stu dent and a conscientious worker in the school room. I thus feel fully qualified for the nositinn of Superintendent of the schools of uiliiam county and if nominated and elected I will put forth every effort for the . best possible , re sults of the schools throughout xne county. ; . J. C. Sturgill. Condon, Ore., March, 30, 190a To Whom it May Concern: . This is to certify that Mr. J. C. Sturgill has charge of the Condon Pnhlir Schools and we as a school board find in him an industrious and painstaking, clear and methodi cal man attending strictly to his duties and permitting no person al interest to interfere with school work. His character is above reproach and he is a man whose influence is for the right ideals. Mr. Sturgill, having made a special study of school-work, thoroughly understands the needs of our public schools and how to meet them. His work here is of ajiigh order and he is securing excellent results. His ability is beyond question," being able to fill any position to which he may aspire and we consider him the strongest man in school work .at" inai nas ever managed our school. From our personal knowledge of Mr. Sturgill we can recom mend him most heartily and without reservation. Considering our public schools as being outside the pale of poli tics ana as Mr. Sturgill is un known to many people of the County we wish to submit the foregoing recommendation.
