: KEVV3 OF THE WEEK' We are requested to announce that there will be no services at the Congregational church next ' Sunday morning or evening on account of the absence of the pastor. ' J. C. Thrall of The Dalles was in Condon this week and insured the Belgian stallion, Bienvenu D'Erque, which was recently pur chased by the Ferry Canyon Horse Co. . While'here this week,. J. C. Thrall, agent for the National Livestock Insurance Co, insured Chacal, the imported Percheron stallion recently purchased by Parman Bros. Frank Golden joined his wife in Portland on Monday. - They returned to Condon Wednesday evening. i Wm. Wherli who was. visiting with his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Myers, at lone returned Tuesday evening. He made a pleasant call at this office and renewed his subscription to the Globe. Mr. Wherli reports that - Mr. Myers, who worked foe some time in the 0. K. Barker shop here has a very good business in lone. Condon Camp No. 10,425, of the Modern Woodmen of America is the latest addition to the num erous lodges of this city. This new camp was instituted lasi Friday evening with sixty mem bers. The organization of the lodge was carried on by I. F. ti l i - i i xi : t fbrover a month. Mr. Roberts is.Deputy Head Consul for the district of Eastern Oregon and and has proven himself to be a very successful organizer. The .following officers were elected: Geo. Ritrtrs. Consul: J.W. Burns. Advisor; J. E. Stevens, Clerk; Earl Myers, Banker; James Smith,' Esoort; Joe Miller, Watch man; Elmer Hall, Sentry; Ed Collins, Joe Young and Frank S6haeffer, Managers. - Condon is to have a circulating library. Mr. Jackson, the book store man, is going to put . in about 150 volumes of the latest publications. Those who join the library must pay $1 for the first book and upon return of that they may take another for only 25 cents. This will be a rare treat for the book lovers in Condon. , Chas. H. Williams left this morning for a week's visit at thersprings where he will try the effect of the mineral waters on a bad cold. From there he will go to Portland to Attend a special mfipfino'. Chester Titim has charge of the jewelry store and business during Mr. Williams' absence. Miss Grace Frizzell of Fossil has -been appointed by Judge Wolverton as United States Com missioner at Fossil to succeed J, S. Stewart of the Fossil Journal L. S. Hineswas'a Dalles visitor on Saturday. Miss Etta Lord left on Wed nesday's local for Condon where she will visit her brother Chas- Lord and wife. The Dalles Chronicle. . - Condon was given a visit yes terday by the big officials of the O. R. &N., Illinois Central, and Canadian Pacific We were un able to learn the object of the big guns' visit They went away in their private car this morning. Born to the wife of Howard When the Merchants National Bank reopens its doors next Mon day morning there will be $1,000 000.00 in cash in the vaults of the institution. This bank is one of the oldest in Portland and the sum of money will make that bank a strong one. The First National of Condon is a corres pondent of the Portland bank, thus giving it strong connections with the banking world. February 12 was Abraham Lincoln's birthday. Cranston and Mrs. Lydia Sturgiil departed for their home in Baker City on Tuesday morning's train, after spending several weeks in Con don. D. B. Thomas has returned from Portland. Mrs. Thomas is still visiting in the Rose City. G. Seaton Taylor went to Port- this morning. -'; ' Arthur Schilling subscribed for the Globe this week. He is out for county clerk and said he wished to read a paper that gave to its readers all the reliable political news. C W. Wilson, who has been running sheep at Skull SpringB for the past year, was in Condon the latter part of last week and renewed his sub. He now lives on Rock Creek. F. T. Sanders of Lost Valley, while in town renewed his sub scription to the Globe. Miss Mabel Richmond has the honor of passing the highest av erage made in the High School this year. She is in the eleventh grade and passed with an aver age of 95 2-5 per cent A pretty wedding took place at the Union church on Eight Mile, at 10:30 a. m., Monday, February 10, when David Bonner of lower Willow Creek and Miss Laura Montague, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Montague, of Eight Mile, were united in marriage. Both young people are well known in this county. Last Friday night the Grande hotel in Arlington experienced a small conflagration by the ex plosion from leaking gas in the lower hall. Damages $25. A. J. Miller of Rock Creek has disposed of his interest in the recently burned opera house block at Moro to Judge Littlefield and L, Barnum. . , Mrs.; Clara H. Waldo of the State Grange, in her talk before the Short Course students at the O. A. C. a few days ago, very pointedly stated the advantages of more co-operation among the wqmen of the farm. Many .ways were mentioned in which the farmer's wife might be made happier by a little co-operation. At one home the sewing for the neighborhood could be done; at another the baking and at an other the laundering. This plan would greatly economize labor and give the farmer's wife a little time for recreation and reading, for gardening or flori culture. If the bread didn't happen to be baked just as mother baked it there would be the compensation that the neigh bors would get together more and come to feel that there are other duties as well as pleasures than the baking or eating of bread. D. A. Russell D. A. Russell died at his home north of Condon at eight o'clock this morning. Deceased had been sick about two weeks with a bad cold which developed into pneumonia, causing his death. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the home in charge of Elder A. J. Moore, Deceased leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss. In rounding the lower turn at the skating rink on Wednesday evening, Paul Balsiger fell and sustained a fracture of the left leg between the ankle and the knee. The fracture was re duced by Drs. Wood and Gavey and he is at present getting along as well as can be expected. Get Free Board Now. Frank Bloon and I. Turlancik were arrested in lleruner last week and brought to Condon to4 answer to the charge of beating their board bills at the Model Rooming House. They plead not guilty and were given a hearing before Justice Wheir on Monday. They were found guilty and were fined $25 each and failing to pay were committed to the jail. ' - District Poultry Show. ' The poultry fanciers of The Dalles have about completed ar rangements for a poultry show at that place on the 27, 28 and 29th of this month, and birds from all the counties comprising the second Eastern Oregon dis trict will be exhibited there. The show is to be a district affair and we are looking forward for some of the poultry fanciers of this county to -bring home some of the prizes. .
