Someone has said that it is be cause money talks that a wo man's head is put on every dol lar. The new gold coins they're mat ing now, Without "In God we Trust"; Will turn up in the hat at church As prized as any dust This is perhaps the reason we have not heard any talk late ly about the motto being left off the new coins. Tomorrow, the 21st, will be the shortest day in the year and, according to some, if you are at church next day and stay for the sermon, you will notice that the 22nd is much longer. When Julius Csesar became the "big stick" of the Roman. Em pire, the month of December contained but 29 days. He added two more one to get ready for Christmas and one to recover from it People in this enlight ened age have decided that Julius must have been a little queer mentally when he set aside only one day to get ready, and they now take from two weeks to four months in preparation and then sigh because "Johnny" did not have time to learn that recita tion. Santa Claus will make the us ual rounds on the night of the 24th. Men will get cigars, neck wear and mustache cups. La dies will get anything from wax dolls to diamonds. Children will get the stomach ache with its complications. Yes, the bank holidays are a thing of the past but we are about to enter upon another set of holidays that are more de pressing on the pocket book than the financial flurry. The origin of the festival of Christmas is attributed to Bishop Telesphorus in the first century of the Christian Era, but it was not until the fourth century that the theologians, after investiga ting all available data, decided upon the 25th of December. Christmas gifts originated with the Greeks. ' From the earliest times Christmas has been consid ered in the double light of a re ligious commemoration and a cheerful f estivaL The custom of singing carols which recalled the songs of the shepherds at the birth of Christ dates from the time when the common people ceased to understand Latin, and collections of these mediaeval car ols were made ana still exist in different parts of Europe. With the passing of the centuries the Christmas celebration has lost much of its primitive boisterous character. The carols which find their place in the churches and the evergreen trimmings are all that, remain of the ancient customs. NOTICE rOPJ PUBLICATION. DEPARTMENT Or? THE INTERIOR Unite State).
