The Times of last week came out in a short editorial in which it seemed to infer that we had written something which we are ashamed of and ought to take back. We have written nothing which any square, fair-minded person could be ashamed of and therefore have nothing to retract The Times also, "as usual, garbled the account which ap peared in the Oregonian of the 12th. We would like to ask why it did not publish the entire article instead of picking out something which suited it? Why did it not quote the little piece about Collier's resignation , "which resignation however had a string to it" Why did it not also publish this, "Thompson should have been punished for the crime as there was evidence In the first trial to show that he provoked the fight with his vie tim and slew without good cause" Of course the Times would like to smooth these things over and blind the eyes of the people to the facts, but it doesn't know how and simply makes matters worse whenever it tries. It was proven last week by the grand success of the May ville Fair that such events are a great boon to Tany district and similar events are to be held in future as everyone has seen the good derived is for the benefit of alL 1 The Grangers are to be congratulated on starting the movement in this district They have done a great deed and their efforts are truly appreciated. The products on display opened the eyes of the people of both counties and the majority of the farmers, who saw what their neighbors were producing on their ranches, went home con vinced that they could get as good results and their labors in the future will be put forth in producing something better than heretofore. The value of the Grange as an organization is wonderful and the work which it has accomplished cannot be too highly , praised. The order is are eager to learn more concern; ing their work. Why a grange has never been organized in Condon is more than we can un derstand, however it has been made known that a move is now on foot for the organizing of a grange in this city. It is hoped that all the farmers of this vici nity and business men will fall heartily into the movement According to an article in last week's Times the Globe is ac- cused of misrepresenting certain parties in a recent editorial. The editorial in question did not refer to any particular person or per sons, however, if anyone thinks we have done him an injustice the columns of this paper are open for any reasonable state ment which ' he may desire to make.- . Soap has been advanced in price. We knew it; salvation will go off the free list next cleanliness is next to godliness, you know. So far as can be seen, the only thing the peace delegates at the Hague have done is to run a board bill At least Mrs. Chadwick made good her threat about never ser ving out her sentence. Mr. Harriman denies the re port that he has ordered all im provements stopped on his rail roads. But he allowed the rumor to soak in long enough to pick up a few bargains at the stock market counter. Juggler Harriman is .likely to let fall some of those railroads he has kept up in the air so long. And there's plenty of room in Eastern Oregon for such a drop. Reports from the middle west say that the Steel Trust is going into the manufacture of bricks, purely for its own consumption of course. But it has been in quiring the price at which all the principal brick firms would sell out to it This move toward monopolizing another source of building material is only natural. If the brick yards, why not the stone quaries .and the lumber yards? Then it would be a nat ural sequence to take in the paint factories and the furniture manufactories. The food of the people who live in the houses is already controlled by another giant combine, and it would not be a long step for these two trusts to coalesce, controlling the' dwell ings of the country and the sus- tinenceof the people in them. Thereafter it might be the nat ural thing for the people to ab sorb the trusts that fed. and housed them and then you would have Bellamy's "Looking Back ward" in practical operation. If we are going to extend the trust idea, we really might as well ex tend it to its logical or illogical conclusions. Notice.
