In a recent editorial the Ore gonian discusses the direct pri mary law with faint praise, its object being to create a senti ment in favor of certain changes in it which will be attempted at the next session of the Legisla ture. The principal point of at tack will be Statement No. 1 which is very objectionable to party bosses as is the whole law for that matter. In 1901 when the bill was introduced into the Senate by a member from Mult nomah, Jack Mathews exclaimed: "What in are you doing! Don't you know that bill will put us fellows out of business if it becomes a law? Aren't you go ing to play the game with us?" Now it is just such fellows as Jack Mathews, Joe Simon Char ley Carey, etc., that the law is aimed at and whenever it is changed by the Legislature it will be referred to the people and kept intact as it is. State ment No. 1 is in the interests of the people and against the inter ests of the political bosses and it will be kept where it is in spite of all attempts to "knife" it Nevertheless it will be attacked and and if any considerable strength is developed for the change it will be "improved" in such a manner that the whole matter of choosing candidates for office will be again under the j manipulation of the political boss-j es of the state and another crop i of statesmen like Mitchell, Mays, Williamson, Baker, Hermann, Carey, Mathews and their innu merable tribe of followers will be developed in our midst. We've had enough of that kind. The direct primary law is the hand cuffs and shackles which keeps them where they belong politi cally. It will be kept on the statute books!
