THE CONDON GLOBE HARTSHORN & PORTWOOD rblUhra. FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 1907. Mrs. Coe Barnard and son of Fossil passed through Condon Monday morning on their way to Portland. Frank Crawford of Lone Rock left Monday morning on a busi ness trip to The Dalles. Phil Morrill returned last Fri day from Hood River where he has been working in a blacksmith shop for the past two weeks. Otis Campbell and Ed. Clough came up from Arlington Satur day evening and spent Sunday in Condon. Mrs. Geo. Wasson and Miss Alice Adlard left Monday morn ing for Hood River where they will camp out and pick strawber ries for a month. Mr. and Mrs. J as. Boyer of Mayville were in Condon a few days this week visiting with Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Brown, who re cently returned from Idaho. Mrs. Boyer is a sister of Mrs. Brown. Miss Una Robinson, who has been visiting relatives here and at Lone Rock for the past month, left Saturday morning for Eu gene. Mrs. E. C Rogers of Portland came up Saturday evening and spent Sunday at the Oregon Ho tel. Mrs. Rogers was a former operator of the Oregon. Will Searcy left Monday morn ing for a few days visit in- Port land. Con Schott of Olex was a Con don visitor Sunday. W. N. Patullo made a business trip to Clem last Saturday. Frank Andrews who came in last week to visit his mother who was very ill at her home near Lone Rock, left Saturday for his home at Endicott, Wash. His mother is improving rapidly. Miss Cora Bowles left Saturday morning for Arlington to visit for a few days with friends. She returned Wednesday. Mrs. Ed Stackhouse and little son, Lee, left Saturday for Port lond to visit with her sons Dick and Ed for a few weeks. They will also visit at Long Beach be fore returning. A basket social and school en tertainment was given at Blalock on Saturday evening and $109.75 was cleared. Friends and pat rons of the school assisted with the arrangements and the whole community manifests a great interest in the improvement of the school. Miss Lula Fitzwater has been assisting Marcus Portwood in the abstract department this week. M. C. Carter, who has been visiting friends and relatives in this county for the past month, came over from Mayville to visit a few days with his sister, Mrs, J. J. Portwood before returning to his home in California. H. I. Travis was arrested at Arlington Monday on the charge of stealing a watch from 0. S. Ebi. He was arraigned before Justice Collins and plead guilty and was fined $100.00 which a mount was not forthcoming and he was consigned to the County jail under a sentence of fifty days, Constable IL R. Shanks brought him to Condon Monday evening and turned him over to Sheriff Rogers. Archie Boyce who has been operating a blacksmith shop at Mayville sold out this week to J. H. Thomas. Mr. Boyce passed through Condon Tuesday morn ing on his way to Olex where he will probably remain for some time. Mrs. J. J. Portwood and son, Hal and Miss Veva Portwood left Friday morning' for Hood River where they spent a few days picking strawberries. They returned Wednesday. Mrs. Colby Clarke left Friday for an extended visit with friends and relatives in Ohio and Vermont Geo. Smith of Arlington was a Condon visitor this week. M.' Abbey made a flying trip to The Dalles the latter part of last week to file on timber claims for parties whom he located south of Condon. Mr. Will Amend and Miss Maud Moore were married Sunday at 10 a. m. by the father of the groom, Elder J. H. Amend, at his home. They moved Tuesday to their future home on the Mad den ranch. The contracting parties are well and favorably know in this community and the Globe joins in congratulations. James and Loretta Burns left Wednesday morning for Cali fornia for a few months vacation. They will visit Los Angles, San Francisco. Sacremento and other points before returning. Wm. Dunlap has invented a brace for the purpose of straigh tening deformed ankles of horses. An experiment is being tried on a horse belonging to Jas. Camer on and it is thought that it will be a success. This brace is the first of the kind ever invented and Mr. Dunlap will make a model and get it patented. Mrs. C. A. Brown and son, Chester, departed for Portland Thursday morning for two weeks visit with friends. W. A. Campbell, the insurance man, was a business visitor in The Dalles this week. Miss Alice Keys and Mrs. W. H. Workinger of Mayville were Condon visitors this week. Mrs. M. M. Cushing of May ville was in Condon Wednesday. Dr. Harry Lane was re-elected Mayor of Portland on the Demo cratic ticket by a majority of 650 votes. As we go to press arrangements are being made to have the Clem and Fossil ball teams meet on the Condon diamond tomorrow, This game was to be played at Fossil but the management of the Condon team has offered a purse of $25 for the winners if they will play here, providing the winning team will play our team Sunday afternoon for a purse of $25. JULY 3RD, 4TH, 5TII Will B Big Daya in Condon. Condon will start on the morn ing of the 3rd. of July and pa triotism, all kinds of amusement, and lota of noise will be abund ant during the three days. The soliciting committe has $850.00 and this will all be used in giv ing those who attend the cele bration a general good time. It looked for a time as though the celebration would fall through on account of the general com mittee not being able to make sat isfactory arrangements with the Park Association but they have agreed in this way: That the com mittee shall guarantee the Park Association the sum of $250.00 and have complete charge of the Park during the celebration, and that, if any money is left after all expenses are paid, it will be left to a vote of those who sub scribed to the fund, as to how it will be disposed of. The different committees will now be appointed and all ar rangements for a first-class cele bration will be started immed iately. Williams 10,00 Miss Inez Depew of Baker City arrived in Condon Monday even ing and ia visiting with Mrs. Dennis. She will probably stay three weeks. Chas. H. Williams has' a new jeweler and optician sign in front of his jewelery store on north Main street . Chas. Lewis of Mikkalo was a Condon visitor this week. The St Thomas Aquinas School is making arrangements to erect a new school building on the lots in Mann's Addition which were given to the school for that pur pose by Edward Dunn. The plans under consideration now call for a brick building three stories high the cost of which will . be between $15000.00 and $20000.00. The work will be start ed as soon as all preparations are completed and will be pushed as rapidly as possible and when finished will be a building that any city might well be proud of. Mrs. John M. Brown of Lone Rock was a Condon visitor Tues day. Silas Brown and Herbert Hart man returned Friday from Hood River where they have been pick ing strawberries for the past two weeks. Dr. Mary Bowerman, the pop ular lady physician, returned to Condon Friday after a few weeks absence. Erma Pattee of Ferry Canyon has ordered a Belle City thresher of Hunt the Hardware Man. Dan Munroe and Nat Shoun, two Mitchell stockman, were in Condon Tuesday making arrange ments for the sale of their wool. These gentlemen that if Condon had two wool sales this season, all the wojI in the Mitchell coun try would come to Condon, as it is much easier to haul here than to Shaniko. Oliver Ward and family start ed overland Tuesday morning for Central Point Oregon. They took two wagons and a buggy and will drive all the way. Blaine Maley and family left Monday for Medford, Oregon where they will make their home in the future. They stopped a few days at Mayville to visit with friends. Fred Bohm is working at Dunn Bros.' during the absence of Jas. and Loretta Burns. Joe Boyer will give a dance at his skating rink on Saturday evening, June 15. This will be the initiation of the new hard maple floor. Mr. Boyer has the floor nearly completed and it is certainly first-class in every way. Mrs. E. A. Mann left for Wal la Walla on Thursday morning's train for a few weeks visit with her parents who reside there. Gwendolyn, the three year old daughter of John Scott accom panied her. A. S. Rice is having a well drill ed this week. Ed Palmer is doing the work and is down 85 feet at last reports, with 75 feet of wa ter. The flow is about 50 gallons every 30 minutes. J. A. Eberle returned Wednes day evening from The Dalles and Portland where he has been for a week looking after business in terests. A. A. Carothers came up from Rock Creek Wednesday evening. Peter Berkes who has been in the County jail under $200.00 bonds on the charge of selling liquor to Indians was released Sunday afternoon with Dr. J. F. Wood and John Dysart as bonds men. The Mayville ball team crossed bats with the Fossil team at the latter place Monday and when the expert accountants had fin ished counting the runs it was found that Fossil had won the game by a score of 82 to 2. Geo. Knox of Fossil cam in Tuesday evening with a carload of horses which he shipped Wed nesday morning to Seattle. Chas. Hein, a prosperous May ville farmer was in Condon Mon day and Tuesday. He purchased thirty three disc records of the Condon Drug Co. The Condon Globe came out last week with six pages all home print making it one of the neatest and newiest country pa pers on our exchange list. Ore gon Daily Journal. Williams the Jeweler received i a shipment of fine white dia monds this week. Agnes Gibbon returned home Sunday from Condon where she has been attending the StThom as Aquinas School. Miss Lula Fitzwater has return ed home from the II. C. Stricklin ranch where she has beon visit ing for the past two weeks. Mrs. Nestor and son of Port land are visiting at the home of H. C. Stricklin. Mrs. Becker and son are spend ing the summer at H. C Strick lins'. Miss Joyce Hershner one of the popular school teachers of the Condon Public School left Thursday for her home, at Lents, i Ore., for a three months vacation. ' Miss Hershner will resume du ! ties at the opening of the school term. Dr. Wood returned Thursday evening from Portland and re ports as we go to press, that up on operating on Mr. Erickson it was found that the spinal cord was completely severed and, al though he is still alive, he cannot recover. A complete account of the accident will be found on the first page. Mrs. Berg of Ferry Canyon met with a painful accident while feeding her turkeys one day this week. Mrs. Berg had picked up one of the little turk eys and was holding in her hands when it suddenly pecked her in the eye. Fred Hawes, Jas. Stevenson, Fred Greiner, Ralph Gage' and Fred Baker returned Wednesday from Trout Lake, Washington, where they have been with the cattle which were taken from this vicinity to J. E. Reynold's ranch near that place. The boys stopped a day at Hood River .on their way home and filled up on strawberries'. They report a suc cessful trip and a good time. Mrs. L. T. Price and little daughters returned Thursday from White Salmon Where they have been visiting for about two weeks. Mrs. Edgar Moore and little son, Mervil, returned Thursday evening from La Grande where they have been visiting.
