The Cannon boom seems to have been only a blank shot Government officials are allow ed forty cents a day for tips to dining car waiters. We can im agine the scant courtesy and food they get from the waiters. Senator Pettus says that the Brownsville investigation makes him tired. From the testimony taken last week Senator Foraker must be feeling the same way. According to his friends Taf t has every state but Oklahoma, and if a certain set of men can prevent it Oklahoma will not get into the Union in time count either way. An Automobile magazine as serts that "the possession of a motor car is not necessarily the proof of great wealth". And the fact is that the possession of one is oftentimes the cause of great poverty. Mr. Roosevelt has been pre sented with an annual pass to all the baseball games in the country free of charge. No wonder he refuses to run for a third term. How would he get time to make use of his pass? Dr. Long, author of many Nature books seems to be the latest distinguished addition to the Ananias Club, but he will doubtless console himself when he observes the increased sale of his books which result from free advertising. The President has orded that young Army officers shall each be put to a riding test. The army officers are disgruntled a bout it but the President has de cided that the ranks of Rough Riders decimated by civil jobs shall be filled again. Senator McCarren of Brooklyn says that a state senator should not be compelled to pay so much to get elected. ''The idea of expending so much money for an office that pays such a small sal ary does not have a good moral effect" are his words but as a matter of fact the only moral thing about it seems to be the size of the salary. A New York daily says money is a drug on the market But unfortunately the drug trust has not been busted. General Kuroki was notable to visit the honorable stock yards but he will find plenty of bad odors in honorable San Francis- co, " . 'There is no such thing as jus tice in America" says Caruso, the tenor of monkey house fame, and he voices the opinion of ev eryone who has ever bought tick ets for grand opera. . The New Orleans Item remarks that "pessimism and a good dinner cannot be in one man". Evidently the editor of the Item does not eat ice cream with his Lobster a la Newburg. A Texas court chopped the fin gers off one of the arms of the Standard Oil octopus by impos ing fines amounting to $1,600,000 but the Supreme court has not yet affirmed the decision. Senator Depew says newspaper criticism is only another form of the tortures practiced during the Inquisition. Or in other words a man need not let his conscience worry him until he is found out. According to an exchange Sec retary Taft is interested in every anti-fat remedy he hears about. If we are not mistaken he will have found a sure one before the presidential nomination comes off. It is rather a curious fact ac cording to Government statistics, the amount of liquors and beer consumed in the United States is increasing quite rapidly, although the area of prohibition has also increased greatly. . The total drink bill of the United States for the current fiscal year, May and June being estimated, will be $1,667,083,610.00. Of this vast sum only $216,228,162.00 was spent for tea, coffee and co caa, leaving $1,450,855,448.00 for alchoholic drinks and beer. The increase in four years has been $160,000,000.00. The total drink bill for five years has been $7,535,146,287.00. The Ameri can people will consume nearly enough drinks this year to pay the present National debt twice over. In gallons the amounts are as follows: Beer, 1,700,000,000 cofTee 1,610,000,000, tea 561,740, 500, spirits and wines 140,328,339. Congress now appropriates near ly, a billion dollars a year for all governmental expenses. The people drink up over a billion and a half. They drink up one fifth of the value of all the farm products of the United States; the liquor bill is more than the value of the corn crop, double that of the wheat crop, more than twice that of the cotton crop, two and one-half that of the hay crop. For the first time in the country's history more beer, in quantity, will have been drunk this year than coffe 20.2 gallons per capita of beer. There has been a large increase in the con sumption of domestic wines. The cheering feature of the subject is that less strong liquors and more mild beverages are being con sumed. This is a trend toward temperance. ATTORNEY'AT-LAW Office tn Condon .National Bank lllock. QW. PARMAN ; ATTORNEY-AT-LAW ? U. 8. COMMISSIONER Careful attention given to all holn entrusted In my cart.
