Senator Bailey of Multnomah county would amend the direct pri mary law by making the Statement No. 1 pledge apply to party candi dates only. The people of Oregon have worn the direct primary clothes but a very short time and as far as we are able to learn, pub lio sentiment is not overwhelming ly la favor of putting any patches on the garments. . The proposed Grunge fair at May ville should receive the hearty sup port and earliest co-operation of ev ery intelligent citixen in the conn ty. All efforts in the pact to hold a fair at Condon have proved of no avail, and tho people of Mayville are to be congratulated upon their enterprise. Jonathan Bourne was elected U S. Senator at Salem Tuesday on the first ballot by an almost unnn iinoiis vote. 11 in election is a won derful triumph of the plain people over the political bouses, and is a grand forward step that will never be retraced in Oregon. . And from what we know of Ronnie's wonder ful energy and resourcefulness, the people of Oregon will never regret their part iu bis election. Fossil Journal. The fact that Chancellor Day of Syracuse University continues his war upon the so called persecutors of the rich, would neem to indicate that the public prosecutors through out the country have made it mighty uncomfortable for the cor porations. We learn from an editorial in the last issue of the Times that indi viduality denotes egotism and en vy. In other words, if an editor would be successful and re spec ted among the people of his community, he must prostrate himself at the feet of a political boss. Reports from New York would seem to indicate that Chas. E Hughes, the newly elected Govern or of the empire State, is making an enviable record for himself. He appears to be his own political boss and unlike the majority of success ful candidates has kept every pre election pledge. Numerous reforms have been proposed by the Governor and he has selected for all important appointive positions men of Unquestionable ability and integrity.
