It wan apparent to the Administra
tion upon receiving the Neil-Rey
nolds report that the packing house
inspector had plainly neglected
their dulv. The appointment of
new inspectors who had moral
stamina enough to enforce the law
would have accomplished the de
sired result. There are many men
in both the republican and demo
cratic parties who now see the mil'
take of bathing the packers before
the gae of the world when a pri
vate bath would have accomplished
the same purpose.
Perhaps everyone is'familiar with
the old fable which, illustrates the
the fact that it's an impossibility
to please everyone. The story
reads something like this: A father
and son, were compelled to to make
a journey and being possessed of
but little money they could only
purchase one ass to carry them to
their destination. At the begin
ning of the journey the father put
the boy on the ass and walked
along by the roadside. They had
traveled but a few miles when they
were acoosted by a stranger who
censured the boy for riding while
his poor father walked. A change
was then made and the father rode
and the boy walked. They had
not traveled a great distance be
fore another stranger censured the
father for riding while his young
son was not given the same r'vi
lege. Upon this objection they
both mounted the ass and rode for
some little distance until they met
another person who suggested that
they change places with the ani
mal, whereupon they tied its legs
together and carried it until they
they came to a bridge where the
animal became frightened and in
its strugles fell Into the river and
was drowned. There have been
thousands of men in both ancient
and modern times who have lost
not only their worldly goods but
the respect of their fellowmen by
following the principles set forth
in this fable. An editor is expect
ed by many of his subset! bers to
follow the same example,' and yet
everyone realises that as soon as
he accepts the muzzle he practical
ly gives a quit claim deed to his
self respect. We believe that the
highest compliment that can be
paid to a newspaper man is to have
small army of bitter enemies
whose hatred is founded upon his
fearless expression of an honest
opinion.
