Au.aa, Clara, Conanl Commander Perhaps there w'aa more truth than wisdom in Henator Fulton's state ment when he said that Secretary Hitchcock of the Department of the Department of the Interior was in hie dotage. The Secretary's feel ing! were very naturally hurt by this remark and he now proposes ti turn loose hie dos of war on the Senator from Oregon and attempt to connect lit til with the land fraud in thin elate. The outcome of the department's Investigation will, of eon me, be watched with much in terest by Oregoniaiis, but a break with the, administration by one of our representative! in Congress Is of in u oh more importance than the secretary's investigation. Oregon is a comparatively a new country and we need many government improvements. With our senior Senator in Cnngrexs at loggerheads with the administra tion we will hardly be in a position to ask any favors from Washington. A Chineee quack who was pleas ed to call himself a doctor was re cently arrested in Portland for practicing medicine without a li cense. It it said that this Oriental fakir has treated hundreds of people who are generally reputed to be sane and intelligent American citi tens. Well, it is said that the American people love to be hum bugged and from the vast army of quacks that are permitted to hold themselves out to the world as practitioners it would seem that there is more than a grain of truth in the assertion. Late-sown wheat on the light lands of Oregon and Washington has apparently suffered consider ably by reason of the exoessive heat, accompanied in some sections by the fatal hot wind wbioh with ers and shrivels the berry while it is in the "milk" or "dough" stage. The pre-eminent advantages of the Fall wheal are again demonstrated as practically everything but the late sown Spring grain was so far along that it wai not affected by the excessively hot weather. The acreage of Spring wheat was some what larger than usual this year, on account of considerable reseed lag being done where winter wheat had beeii killed by the cold weather. The conditions are not always fa vorable for wheatgrowers to get in a full aoreage of Fall grain, but the experience o f the past few days, as well as that'of former seasons, has demonstrated beyond all question that the winter wheat is the only one that nan be relied on one year with another with positive assur ance of sucoess. ' Perhaps at no time in the histo ry of Oilliatu oounty or the state, have laboring Dien been so scarce as at present. There are a great many ranchers who find it an utter impossibility to get enough men to help with the harvest. Professional 0rd. HAZELVOOD.
