Vauhnii, r. a. w. w. Otiu.axdi. o. B. The co(lal mongers and ped dlers of campain lies who have been ending out anonymous letter to Oregon republican, during the laiit few day were wine enough to mil a grain of truth with their slander and prevarication. They state with much emphasis that Jonathan Bourne was a free silver republican some ten years ago and quote the Oregonian of that year to substan tiate the statement. That Bourne was a free silver republican at that time we will not deny. 80 was Mitchell, Fulton, Tongue who was a member of Congress at that lime and a host of other prominent re publicans in Oregon were guilty of the same crime but we have not heard of anyone questioning their honesty or fitnpxti for political oflioe until we received thin circular It l' tor which was reeking with puliti cal rottetieaa. They claim that Bourne lied up the state legialaure. Granting for the sake of argument thai he with other members did so did he violate any prece dent in so doing. Hasn't the same thing been done time and time again in every state in the Union? Senator Fulton did it Mitchell did it. Joe Simon, the law partner , ol John M. Ueariii did the selfsame thing. Bourne has labored for years to get the present primary law enacted into a law to prevent these legislative holdups, lie has succeeded in getting the law enaot ed and it is up for trial at the June election. The senders of these an onymous letter are not only en emies of Bourne but enemies of the primary law. Will you cast your ballot for these scurvy, lying black mailers, who have resorted to the anonymous letter as the only means available to defeat Bourne and the will of the people or will you cast your ballot for the champion of the primary law, the friend of the com mon people and the enemy of the trusts and oorrut politicians? Jack Mathews, that great past master of dirty politics has buck led oh his armor and now strides into the political arena as the champion of some unknown can didate for the U. S. Senate. In an anonymous circular, republi cans are advised to vote for Gear in but in the same letter are told that the election of the democratic nominee in June -vill not deprive Oregon of a republican U. S. Sen ator. Will the dem o ratio voters of Oregon allow themselves to be made the tool of Jack Matthews? Will they vote for Gearin believing that a republican legislature will neither elect the republican or the democratic nominee in case Gearin be elected next Monday, but will select some creature of Jaok Mattews for the v senator ship. If Bourne is elected at the coming eleotion' the republican legislature must ratify such an eleotion. Joe bimon, who 11 respected most where ha is known least, is a law partner of John M. Gearin. Neith er Joe Simon, Jaok Mathews, or any other politician of like stand ing it the least bit eothuslsistio for Jonathan Bourne. Ask any poll tioal boss of any county in the state how be stands on the U. 8. Senatorsblp. As a unit they are opposed to Jonathan Bourne. Ask theAmerioan Tobacco Trust, the Standard Oil Co or any other cor poration bow they stand on the Senatorsblp. They too are opposed to Bourne.Neitber the trusts or the politicians believe that the U. S. Senators should be elected by the direct vote of the people, they have no faith in the primary law or in anything which it not to the inter ests of the special privilege class Bourne on the contrary takes issue with them on these questions. He has worked for years for a primary law which would give the people an opportunity to select their own of Hoers without the dictation oft po- litiaal boss. If Bourne is elected he will be under obligations to the common people. The criminal w.irka in the dark ness of the night. The corrupt and unscrupulous politicians have se lected the anonymous letter as a means ofdefeatine Jonathan Bourne and the primary law. These let ters nave been received within the past few days by nearly everv re publican in the state of Oregon and arter making an attack upon the character of Mr. Bourne which is founded in pure uuadulerated mal ice they call upon republicans to to vote for Mr. Gearin and in the same breath state that "The defeat of Bournein June will not deorive Oregon of a republican Senator for the legislature being republican will elect a senator who belongs to that party." It is clearly a con spiracy to defeat the primary law. w bether by fair means or foul it is evident that they are determined to defeat the will of the neonle. Such a communication is an insult to the recipient. No fair minded man will pay any attention to such a letter. Hundreds of democrat who had expected to vote for Gear- in will now vote for Bourne rather than see the primary law defeated and the office of U. S. Senator auc tioned off to the highest bidder at at the next session of the legislature. THE HOTEL GRANDE R. F. MUNROE, Prop. First-class in every re spect.
