politician! In every nook and cor
ner of the Hate would like to see
defeated, ! the election of the U. S.
Senator by the popular vote of the
people. There are short lighted
and unscrupulous politicians in the
republican party who would wel
oouie the election of the democrat
nominee for U. 8. Senator. They
would welcome anything which
would be of a pecuniary or of a po
political benefit to themselves.
They know full well that Jonathan
Bourne is master of his own ,looo
motion. He received the republi
can nomination for Senator in spite
of the bitter fight that was waged
against -him by the large corpora
tions and their omnipresent serv
ants, the politicians. They know
that if a democrat is elected in
June, that a republican legislature
could hardly be expectwl to ratify
such an election. They know that
if a state which is overwhelmingly
republican elects a democratic Sen
ator under the direct primary sys
tem that it will bring the new law
into disrepute among the republi
cans and the chances for its repeal
will be exceedingly good. Jona
than Bourne stands with the com
mom people; he depended upon
their support at the primaries and
the reult showed plainly that he
was not a victim of misplaced con
fidence. He is depending uttpn the
same support at the June election,
and he will get it. A vote for Jon
athan Bourne is a vote lor a clean,
able man, for the principles of
republicanism andthe direct pri
mary law. ;
The Oregon Daily Journal is
seeking to make campaign thunder
of the fact that Dr. Withycombe,
republican nominee for Governor
waa born of foreign parents on the
shores of a foreign land. Ye gods!
what a terrible crime to lay at the
door of the republican nominee. Dr.
Withycombe was born in England.
When seventeen years of age he
came to this ' country and became
an American citizen. He has al
, way t voted the republican ticket.
His record as a republican and as a
man is beyond reproach, but the
Journal, knowing that it would be
impossible to make a fight upon the
principles the two candidates repre
sent, knowing that the character of
Dr. Withycombe ie irreproachable,
is attempting to make his birth
place an icsue. The Journal and
other Chamberlain supporters who
set up this hue and cry have insult
ed the intelligence of Oregon voters
and of every American citizen. i
America, and especially in the great
west, a man's birth place means
nothing, his anaeotora mean noth
ing. When we elect a Governor or
other public official we will elect a
man whose character 10 above re
proach, whose ability is unquestion
ed and who will remain true to the
principles of the party that nomi
nated and elected him. Such a
man is Dr. Withycombe of Coryallis.
