"The reason I speak on this sob
ject is because there is a disposition
on the part of 'certain minister?,'
who claim to be God's representa
tives, to attribute this terrible ca
lamity to the judgment of God on
the wickedness of San Francisco. ' I
want to file my protest against
such a view of the subject. Though
I may have erred in judgment in
selecting this theme" at this time,
there arises in me an irresistible
rejection of " the " theory thai God
has sent this calamity upon the
cities of California because of their
wicked neaa.V I know- very well
that preachers, many of them, are
ready to do that very thing, and
have already stated, to the people
that this calewity is the judgment
of God because San Francisco is so
wicked. Now I want to place those
who take such a view of the subject
in a logical light. In olden times
when Lot is said to have interced
ed with God in behalf, of Sodom
and Gomorrah, he was told that, if
he could find ten righteous men in
the city of Sodom he (God) would
not destroy It. ' Lot set about to
see if be could find the ten men.
He could not. Then God is said to
have told him that if he could find
five righteous men he would spare
the city. But he could not find
the five. The result was Sodom
was destroyed and the city of the
plains along with it." Those of you
who are well acquainted with the
sins attributed to Sodom know very
well there is no modern city where
those Bins exist or are tolerated.
Now, if God destroyed Sail Fran
cinco because of its wickedness there
were not logically' m the city five
righteous men. Now the. truth is
that San Francisco is no more
wicked than other citiesand if this
city had to be destroyed because of
its wickedness where would Port
land come in? Is Portland Im
maculate? Is it much purer-than
San Francisco? If s6 then why
are you so afraid of the dec truction
of this city? The truth is that
God had nothing to do with these
visitations. AH these convulsions
are in accordance with the opera
tions of natural laws, whether earth
quakes or cyclones, famines or pes
tilences. , All are the works of Na
ture. I have too much respect for
the character of God. He is not
such a monster as to bring such
wholesale destruction upon inno
cent people. There are some clergy
men who, think that they know
everything about God's plans.. The

realise that San Francisco, Is allits'
stately grandeur and magnificence.

olation and ruin. s The pluck and
heroism of its citiiens will rebuild
it Its location as a mart of trade
possessing one of the .best harbors
in the world, and its commercial
necessities, will require its rebuild
ing. Men may predict " that it is

The promptness with which the
cititens of interior California and
other states responded to the re
lief of the homeless and suffering
inhabitants of Sao . Francisco,
speaks well for the, generosity and
human sympathy of the American
citiien. The news of the, great dis
aster had hardly beeo sent over
the wires before, those who . were
charitably inclined began the work
of rasing money and preparing
provisions for the inhabitants of
the striken city. However great
may be the reputation of the Yan
kee for native shrewdness, however
much he may love the glitter of
gold, in time of distress or need he
graciously opens up his purse and
is usually the first to give his time
and energies to the relief of tboe

The fact that Jonathan Bourne
carried Condon and Gilliam County
for the republican nomination for
United States Senator by a com
fortable plurality, will be a sur
prise party to state politicians who
were under the impression thit the
people of this neck of the woods
would allow a political boss to do
their thinking for them. The . L.
Smith "goods" in this county were
not only slightly damaged but
undelivered. "

nomination for U. 8. Senator Now
is the time for the "calamity bowl
ers" who have an ax to grind to
"get busy."
