Whar higher Ideal, what more sacred trunt, what greater factor for good or for evil could exist than that of motherhood? The great moral and intellectual school of American citizenship is the home, in that home the mother is the teacher, She has the care, the nurture and training of her off spring. The foundation for a good or a bad character is laid during the boyhood or girlhood day. If the child be a boy he will sometime be a voter. If his mother was a woman of good character and inoc ulated the goodoexH ot her heart and the soundness of her mind in to that of her child she could rest assured that when that child reach ed his majority and was called up on to cast his ballot it would not only be cast upon the right side of every moral question, but no law would receive his sanction that was opposed to the interests of women. We often speak of the laws upon our statute books as "man-made laws" but this is hardly correct, they are "mother-made laws." The men who sit in the legislative halls today enacting laws are but voicing the sentiment of their early train ing. If that training has been neg lected, fair and just laws could hardly be expected Of course there are exceptions to the forego ing statement but we were speak ina of the general rule rather than of the exceptions. We believe that the sentiment of the majority of American mothers is voiced in the words of a Condon woman who, when broached upon the subject of emial suffrage replied: "I cannot say a word in its favor. El lis of Pendleton is an Eastern Ore- eon man, together with the fact that he has, with much credit to himself and to this Congressional district, served the people of Oregon in the lower house of Congress in times past, should give him a strong following in all Eastern Oregon counties. While serving the peo pie of Oregon at Washington the Judge made many friends among both the members of the House and the Senate. Many of these friends are still in Congress and, with the following which the Judge already has at Washington, he could doubtless do more for the people of Eastern Oregon and the state at large than any other candi date who is seeking the nomination.
