It is on the old time theory that "the King can do no wrong" that , certain artiRiin papers throughout the state bane their defense of the prominent Orrgonlam who have been recently indicted by the feder al grand jury for alleged complicity in the laud frauds. Thene newa paper atidogiHts take the poitition that beeatiMH of the high political tation occupied by these men they should be above suspicion and that the action of I'ronecutor Ileney and the members of the federal grand jury in returning indictments against them is nothing short of lone majfHte, or high treason. An attempt is made by theMe narrow minded partixans to belittle the indictments because evidence was given in the cam against Mitchell and Hermann by 1'uter, McKinley and other convicted members of the same ring while the statement of Mr. Ileney which was given wide publicity some time ago, that he will be able to convict both of the ii:0tiMd wiiiiuut putting Fulrf, McKinley nor any other member of the ring on the stand is judic iously ignored. These partisan writers should remember that Mr. Ileney is a special representative of I'rHideut Roosevelt and the United States government and that it is hardly probable he ban been sent to Oregon to conduct a inal iciourt prosecution against innocent men. Fair minded people will hardly accept such an implied charge against the president and other high government officials. The fact that Mr. Mitchell ha grown gray us one of Oregon's re presentatives in the eenate or that Mr. Hermann has been U. 8. Land Commissioner and after being dis missed from that jmxition by the president for alleged crookedness wa8 immediately elected to con gress should have no bearing on the guilt or innocence of either of them as regard the laud frauds. If they are guilty they should be punished and their high position should give them no - mitigation of that punishment. If they are in nocent the facts will no doubt come out and result in their full vindi cation. Partisan zeal in their be half at this time is in poor taste. They should have a fair trial nothing more. Any effort at this time to hamper or belittle the government prosecutor or the grand jury in their efforts to purge the state of this mass of rottenness and corruption shows a low ebb of pub lic morals and an entire disregard for the true interests of the state or the nation. THE POOR, DOWN TRODDEN TRUSTS. Toward the close of the presi dential campaign both parties edi fied the country by denouncing the trusts. The Democrats said in loud tones that the trust is the greatest evil of the day, and if the Republicans were a little . shy at speaking out so loudly, we can, perhaps, explain their modesty. It would be like looking for a needle in a haystack, or worse, to attempt to find a newspaper or a political party which would stand as a defender of the trusts. Being of a sympathizing disposition, and feeling a sort of pity as we Bee the trust out in the cold, cold world, subjected to its rebuffs and scorns, without a friendly hand to help it, we feel that it would be opportune to say a word in favor of the poor, downtrodden trust. In the first rjluce. legislation will never i ton ' ' the wheels of progress. The trust is economic progress, inevitably brought about by the conditions which confroot us. No man, no set of men,' is responsible for the trust idea It came as a develop ment, a step forward in the proper conduct of the business of the world, and if facts point to any thing they point to a stronger, more unified economic movement along the same lines. If society is advancing, then the trust in itself is a good thing. If society is not making progress, but is retrograd ing, then the truct is an evil. Any theory, however, must be false and misleading which fails to recognize the great world movement, for social improvement, discernible at the very dawn of history and easily traceable up to the present day. We do not undertake to sav what will be the ultimate specific out come of the trust movement, but that, as n whole, it will result in the betterment of society and a more economic adjustment of the business of the nation, there can be little doubt.
