But busi ness and polities are very often in terwoven and audi seems to be the .u at this time. We must have an open river; we cannot afford to wait for a canal, therefore the port age road is the only means of relief k-flua. Judging from past experi -j ence with the present boart of port-1 age commissioners we cannot hope for an early completion of the port age road without further legislative action and, with this idea in mind. it seems from the reports that have reached us that a coiunderable ma jority of the people of Gilliam, Wheeler and Sherman counties irrespective of party, have decided to support M.r. Bowertuau for joint senator for theeanie reasons which have been previously urged by this paper, viz: He has clearly detined his position on the portage question in euch a manner that every voter knows just where be stands. He took an active interest in the recent open river convention and is lined up there with the live, wide awake citizens of the Inland Empire who want to belter their environment and who try to do Fomething to help themselves and he is a mem ber of the political party which will have a majority in the next legislature of about 6ix to one and will therefore be in a .position to CJinh.tt oppisiou to and secure sup port for the portage project with better effect than any member ol the minority party who could be sent there. This paper is not and we take it that many voters of the district are not disposed to support Mr Bowerman because he is Mr. Bow t-nnan, or because be is a republi can, or because he is a citizen of Condon, but simply because we be lieve the portage road to be the paramount issue of this campaign and that he is in a position to put up the strongest fight in the state senate for that proposition of any man we could send there. That is the situation and we believe the voters understand it perfectly. When the Williams murder trial was begun at The Dulles on the af ternoou of Tuesday of last week it was 'announced by the Portland newspapercorrespondent who were present that it w )uld require a week to secure a jury and at least three weeks to try the case. That these gentlemen were not familiar with the court proceedure which pre vails in the seventh district is ap parent from the fact that the case was closed Friday evening at 8 o'clock when the jury brought in a verdict of murder in the first de gree. Instead of three weeks the case was tried out and the criminal convicted in three and one-half days. In many courts the proph ecy vvoiilo no doubt have held good but . not bo in the district over which Judge V. L. Bradshaw pre sides. So thorough and business like are the uiethotls which he fol lows in disposing of the cases that come before his court and so insist ent is he that ever' attorney and officer connected with his court shall attend strictly to Business while court is in session that long drawn out cases are unknown in his district and every tax payer understands that this means a sav ing of money to him. Long terms of court mean big expense bills for the'peonle to pay and the people of this district appreciate that fact. That is why Judge Bradshaw will be reelected by an overwhelming majority next Monday. The bitter and uncalled for per sonal attack tn uld on Frank Men efee by the Arlington Record last week had the effect of leaving the impresrion on the minds of the vot ers in this county that Mr. Mene fec must have refused or neglected to contribute to the Record's cam paign sack. This view is borne out by the marked change in the Record's estimate of the gentleman since its famous? "good God good devil" writeup of the previous week as well as by stories related by other candidates of attempted leg pulling while they were in the north end. The (Ji.obk is neither s.ipp -irtin or opposing Mr Meno fmt but it stands for fair play and decency and it is against the pedd ling of a newspaper' .influence; as a huckster would sell (i.-h.
