THURSDAY JUNE 25. I0O3. A COMPENSATION. The recent disaster at Heppner, while one of the most terrible ca lamities which has ever befallen any city, population considered, is not without its compensation.' It is worth something to have the betterqualitiesof humanity brought out once in awhile lest we grow to believe that the noble impulse? of the human heart have become entirely obliterated in this sordid selfish age, when, to the casual ob server, it often seems that the whole structure of human endeavor and effort is founded on purely selfish motives. The people of Oregon have scarcely realized the true import of the published stor ies of similar horrors which have occurred from time to time, in dif ferent parts of the world, during the past few months, but it was only necessary that such a calam ity should be brought home to them that the entire state should be swept with a wave of brotherly love and Christian charity such as has not before been felt in the Ore gm country, at least since the early pioneer days. When the news was flashed abroad Monday morning that Heppner had been devastated, her many beautiful homes ruined and hundreds of her people killed, there swept with it a wave of fellow feeling and love which was good to see. Every community at once began to devise means of relief. Hundreds of men and scores of women were on the road to Heppner in an hour to do what they could to care for the living and to bring some sort of or der from the chaos the Hood had .wrought Rich and poor, high and low, the banker and bjotblack, the cultured lady and the outcast from the red light district, worked side by side in this labor of love and all were actuated by a common impulse. Death, the great leveler, was there and in his awful presence rank and station, personal com fort, everything was forgotten in the common desire to aid and com fort their stricken neighbors. Were it not for such occasions as this to bring out our better qualities we might come to think that real love and tender hearts and kindness one to another had perished from the earth. The recent rains have done wonders for the crops in this section of the coon- try and the prospects are for a bountiful harvest. Campbell, the well known insurance man who hat boats of friends io Condon and Gilliam coonty, as well at all over the interior of East ern Oregon, is down with typhoid fever at Canyon City. The Condon Brickyard presents a busy scene thete dare. A foil force of men is employed and S000 brick are made every day. The first kiln of 250,000 will be ready to fire in about a week anb frooi 75 to 85 cords ot wood will be re quired to complete the burning. HawesA price are ponnding away with their steam well drill at the new city well near the water tower. They have encountered two or three etratas of unusually hard rock bnt are making sat isfactory progress. The well is now lown about 1 10 feet with 65 feet of wat er. More water is being encountered with depth and the indications are fa vorable for a strong well. J. Q. Jarvis, secretary and treasurer of the Condon Park Association, desires subscribers to the capital stock of the association to pay in . the whole or a part of their subscriptions at ones so that fonds will be available to pay for the work of improving the park as fast as it is done. It is an ideal place for driving riding wheeling or walking and the snrf bathing is unsurpassable. The excellent botela and boarding booses provide good accommodations at prices ranging from one dollar to three dollars per day. The round trip rate from Portland to Astoria is $2.50; to Ocean Beach points $4 00. good until October 15tb.
