THE GOIlDOli GLOBE. THURSDAY, OCTOBER J. TOOST. OPlMVIt CILIXGES. A somewhat startling effect ofthe euttl strike is the rapid, and rculie&l change io public sentiment, as- re flected by the metropolitan news papervr on the question of the f ubHc ownership of public utilities. Th same newspapers which, only a few weeks ago, were vehe ment in their dentmd&tuuv of all such "crasy schemes of imprwetr- cable, visionary socialists," even if they did not go so far as to de nounce thetn as the "dangerous doctrines. of demagogical anarch ists," have, under the pressure of circumstances and the demands of a suffering public, come to look vpouth government ownership of tb anthracite coal mines as not nlj a very necessary hut a most fTeauoble and commendable thing. Tha unwarranted" and unbearable attitole- of thr coal magnates to ward1 the miners and the public, within the last two weeks, is the oaT .a iron rf ia mAi n a n era in I - the public temper and, should the exigencies of the situation, and the pressing necessities of the people, force the government to this radi eal almost revolutionary step, the coal barons will have only themselves to thank for their pre dicament. Many people have habitually opposed the idea of public owner ship and upheld" the private- owner ship and exploitation , of public utilities on the old bourbonish theory that "what is is right; bat the rapid whirl of events in these co-anead zutn. century days is- conditions of men to a realization of the fact that, perhaps after all, the climax of perfection in the sci ence of government and economics has not yet been fully attained. The arrogant bearing of the coal operators indicates that they be lieve their position to be so strong 'that they can ride rough-shod over the rights of the miners and the public and even defy and insult the president of tho United States. In effect they said at the White House 'conference" and are still saying: Weown the coal; we control the situation; we have money enough and henchmen enough to control the different legislative bodies, wherever and whenever necessary to subserve our interests; and we may have a string on the courts. We are the masters: and what are you going to do about it? Come to your master's terms, ye vassals, all of you, from President Roose velt down to the humblest toiler iu the mines, or freeze and die at our T J .l T ut l:. wtuuo nucu uuicns uiuvrs lius uii- ter blasts." f The trend of events today indi cates what the people are going to try to do about it and it remains to he seen which force the 75,000,000 people of America or the five pres- iden t s of the coal carrying railways the strwrer. Things have been happening pretty fast lately and they promise to continue to happen at such a rate, in the im mediate future, as to make true, in one sense at least, the oU quoted contention of the old darkey preacher that "The- world do move.'
