The Swiss, " wore- wide than we, have now imidv all the railroads govern ment property. In Germany all railroads must e.irry one mail car free. If other cars are needed to transport the mail, the government -. pays a email rate, which barely represents the cost of hauling the cars. Austria's rules are practically the same as those of Germany. The British parlituent like our own national congress, consists largely of men owned by the rail roads. But they have some shame over there, and although the Brit ish mail service includes the parcel post and does the work of our ex . press companies, the government pays to the railroads for all its carrying, including this enormous enormous parcel express business, less than one-ninth of the amount which the United States govern ment pays the railroads for carry ing pure mail matter. If you want to know how the railroads rob- the government, through the connireance of sena tors, .congressmen and others in fluenced by the railroad lobby, study these figures which compare the charges for transporting the government mail matter and ex press matter to a New York central station, a distance of 20 miles from New York. For carrying 200 pounds per day of mail matter, at 150 a mile per annum, the railroad company is authorized to charge $1,000. Tkfi ; express company carries a 20Q-jKund package rthe same dis tance every day for $365 a j'ear. I In other words the government! pays $1,000 for carrying 200 pounds of mail matter 20 miles every day for a year in addition to paying an enormous rental for the cars. Ex press matter travels the same dis tance at the Bame speed for $365 a year, and both the railrord com pany and the express company make a good profit on the trans action. Poor's Manual gives the Penn sylvania Railroad Company's own Btatemeut for 1900 as to its earn ings. On passengers, the railroads earn a small fraction over 2 cents per mile per passenger. On freight it earns a little less than one-third of a cent per mile per ton. The government, however pays all the railroads including the Pennsylvania, an average of ,12.18 per mile. -Journal. Utter, a prominent phy sician, of Panama, Colombia, in a recent letter states : "Last March I had as a putient a youn lady 1ft years of age, who had a very bad attack of dys entery. Everything I prescribed for her proved ineffectual Hnd she was growing worse every honr. : Her parents were sure she would die. She had become-so weak that she could not turn over in bed. What to do at this critical mo mot was a stndv for me, hut I thought of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy and as a last resort prescribed it'. .The' most wonderful re nit. was effected. Less than one-sixth penny per hour represents the earnings of the cottage weavers of Boehmerwald, Bohemia, who are reduced almost to starvation by the depression of the continental linen industry. It is no wonder that they are reduced to such a state when it takes them six hours to earn a penny. It looks improbable that human beings can exist on such frightfully low com pensatiotiAnd the pity of it is that men and women should be compelled to toil for such miserable compensation. It is a sad com mentary on the boasted civilization of this century that such a deplor able state of affair 8 as this should exist Washingtonian. Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy lias a world wide reputation for its cares. It never fails and is pleasant and safe to take. For Bale by Condon Pharmacy. There are to be several weddings "in high life" in Portland during the September Carnival of the Portland Elks. These weddings are of more than passing interest to the public, inasmuch as the con nubial knot will be tied in a baloon in mid-air, a thousand feet above the ground, in plain view of thous ands. This is one of the novelties What a Tale It Tells. If that mirror of yours shows a wretch ed, sallow complexion, a jaundiced look moth patches and blotches on the skin, it's liver trouble; but Dr. King's New Life Pills regulate the liver, pnryfy the blood, give clear skin, rosy cheeks, rfeb complexion. " Last May," says Mrs. Curtis Baker, of Bookwalter, Ohio, "an infant child of our neighbor.was suffering from cholera infantum. The doctor had given op all hopes of recovery. I took a bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar rhoea Remedy to the house telling them I felt sure it would do good if used ac cording to directions. In two days time the child bad fully recovered, and is now (nearly a year since) a vigorous, healthy girl. I have recommended this remedy frequently and have never known it to fail in any single instance." For sale by Condon Pharmacy. For Sale. One span well matched grey horses. Weight 1600B6.
