PEST OF THE SUMMER INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THEl MOSQUITO Hatches) la Stagnant Water TaaaM Through Three Stance of Life and He roines m Husy Seeker After Blood Disseminator- of Disease There are a few facts which may lu the future be Incorporated lu the biog raphy of the mos.iulto, facta which have been collected partly by the lu qulry of scientists, and partly by the observations of laymen who live In sections whore the pestiferous insect thrives In ureat numbers. The mos quito Is observed in three ' different forms, as an egg, lu larvae, as a wlg-gle-tau, and as a mosquito with wings. E.crrs are hatched by the warmth of the suu. One mosquito may lay 1,000, 000 esss. Often many of these eggs are destroyed. Mosquitoes cannot propagate without the aid of water. The eggs are deposited on the surface of the water. Eggs hatch within a few- weeks after they are deposited by the female. They develop wlggle-talls, the curious forms of life often found In rain barrels, cisterns. In gutters filled with stagnant water and la stagnant pools. In this wiggle-tall atage of his development the mosquito breathes through his tall He spends this part of his life In rushing to and from the surface of the water. When he reach es the surface, with head down, he shoves two delicate syphons through the water level, supplies his lungs with the needed air and dives uuder the water again, where he sucks In the vegetable Juices necessary to his sus tenance. He remains a wiggle-tall for a week or ten days, when his wings de velop and he becomes a navigator of the air and sails forth to torment mem bers of the human family and other animals. He Is fond of animal blood. He needs It In his business. He cannot propagate without It He also likes sugar. Blood, sugar and vegetable juices are his principal diet A mos qnlto's food capacity is roughly est! mated at one drop of blood. His di intensions are uncertain. The gray mosquito, the day tormen- to. Is probably the smallest variety, He is of a very light weight not tip ping the beam at more than one-fourth of a grain, and often not weighing quite so much. Some of them are so light that when unfed that they will not disturb the balance of the most delicately poised scales. The small mosquito is the treacherous kind. He always lights on the under side of the hand or arm, apparently, knowing that he is beyond the reach of the eye. lie Is the same fellow who will crawl under the edges of the bar or slip un der the sheet There is another and larger variety, a kind that will drop on you like a flake of snow. They land with their labium, or lance, un folded and with point down, and they begin operations at once. While the mosquito of this' brand weighs about one-half of a grain, he seems to have the tonnage and potentiality of a pile driver when be punctures the skin. There are about SO known varieties of mosquitoes in this section of the world. The mosquito's labium, the thing he stings with. Is of uncertain length. It Is as sharp as a needle, hol low like a hair, and It Is through this that he sucks blood Into bis system. The mosquito cannot stand a strong wind. He seeks a low place when the wind Is high. He never gets more than 100 yards from the place of his birth. The eggs are deposited on stilL stag nant water. Otherwise they will be destroyed. The life of the mosquito covers a span of sixty days. As a dis seminator of diseases, scientific men have agreed that his responsibility is very heavy. New Orleans Democrat FIRE-PROOF RAILWAY CARS. What Prussian Government Officials Seek to Accomplish. The managers of American railways might, to their own great advantage as well as to that of their patrons, take a leaf out of the book of the govern ment railway control of Prussia. These, officials have ordered that ex periments should be made looking to ward the substitution upon the 30,000 miles of railroads which they operate t uon-combustible cars for the more or less inflammable boxes In which the public are now transported from place to place. The steel trucks are, of course, already, comparatively safe from destruction by fire, but the con struction of the superstructure of these coaches has always been of such a na ture as to be something of a menace to the traveler's safety. The walls and floors and general trim of passenger cars have ordinarily been constructed of woods thafeare peculiarly Inflamma ble, and the use of oils in their clean sing and decoration has intensified the danger. The Prussian experiments, In recognition of these facts, are to be made In the direction of making floors and walls of materials chemically treated so as to make them non-combustible, and of the construction of seats stuffed with fire-proof cocoanut fiber and having asbestos coverings. It is an Important step and In the right direction; and In a country like our own, where there is so much more travel and .a comparatively greater duty for conserving the security of the traveling public over more than 180,000 miles of road bed, it would seem as If it would be a wise precedent for the railway authorities to follow. As a rule our railways are exceptionally well managed; and the traveler In the United States gets a vast amount of comfort and convenience at a very slight personal risk, but the further step toward" the making of fire-proof coaches would serve to reduce that risk to a minimum which would amount almost to Its total extinction. Harper's Weekly. BY THE PING-PONQ POST. Little . Ball Fad and Other Strange Waye of Sending Letters. Liverpool postmen have recently been i In a state bordering on distraction. Some foolish person 1n that city Inaug urated a dew fashion of using ping pong halls as postcards. The balls were stamped, an address written un der the stamp and the message crawled on the rent of the surface, The fashion spread rapidly and the pil lar boxes became full of these mis sives, which, from their shape, gave the unfortunate postmen and post office officials an enormous amount of trouble." At last the authorities were forced to Intervene, and It Is now con trary to the regulations to use the lit tle globes of celluloid for posts, pur poses. Writing paper, or, Indeed, paper of any kind. Is usually at a premium among soldiers on active service. Many very curious substitutes have arrived from our army lu South Africa. One of the commonest has lieen mcalle leaves. "Mealies" Is the South African name for maize. Round the matte cob grows a number of strong enveloping sheaths which, when dry, turn to a pale yellow color and can then be writ ten upon. After Colcnso there was found grasped In the stiffened hands of a dead soldier a piece of leather with a dying message scrawled upon It with a stump of pencil It was a layer of the sole of the dead man's boot which had probably been loosened with much marching, and which he had contrived to rip off. It safely reached the poor fellow's family In England. . From the Philippines, too, some curi ous letters have been received by the friends of American soldiers, says Ixn- don Tlt-BIts. One of the most Inge nious was a piece of native bamboo, about a foot long, on which an address had been carved with a peuknlfe. The letter was Inside this hollow tube, and held there by wooden pins at each end. The writer explained that he had found It Impossible to got an envelope or to find any gum to make one, so ht had recourse to this expedient DOWN EAST" NAMES. Odd Designations of Various Persons in the State of Maine. . There Is In the northern part of Pis cataquis County a most estimable fam ily, which consists of Mr. and Mrs. Ossian Calllgan and their seven chil dren. Three of the children are girls, and the remaining four, naturally enough, are boys. The boys were chris tened Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, while the daughters rejotce In the names of Faith, Hope and Charity. They are said to be among the most attractive young women in that section of the State. There is another Maine family which also deserves mention In this connection. They orlglually came from Virginia, and settled In the north western part of Hancock County soon after the war. Mr. and Mrs. Erastus Black are negroes of the darkest possl ble shade, and their five children are named as follows: Abraham Lincoln Black, Harriet Beecher Stowe Black, Hannibal Hamlin Black, Julia Ward Howe Black, and L'lysses Grant Black. All of the family are still living, but the father and mother and Harriet are the only ones who now reside In Maine. Among others are A. Hogg, a well known groceryman In the western part of the State, and A. Bird Cough, a prosperous Bar Harbor groceryman Neal & Pray was formerly a well known undertaking firm in one of the towns along the coast while I. C. The list might even now be continued almost indefinitely. And there are still many towns to be heard from Kennebec, Me., Journal. Keeps Kisses for Royalty. Many comments were made because the German Emperor kissed Prince Henry when the latter returned from his recent -visit to this country. As a matter of fact although Emperor Will iam is the greater kisser of men among the sovereigns of the world, he Is also a hearty handshaker and the freest of all monarchs in this particular. In deed, he and the King of Italy are the only supreme rulers who shake lunula at all with other than brother sover eigns. The Kaiser reserves his kisses for royalty exclusively. When be visits a monarch or receives a visit from one he salutes him with six kisses three on either check. This sometimes be fore a crowd of thousands of onlookers, not to mention a regiment or so of sol diers. But the war lord will shake bauds with almost anyone. He has , a grip that is famous among his subjects, too, and the favor of his hand grasp Is not assiduously sought by those who have had some experience with it His Majesty has a big, strong hand, with muscles like iron. They have been cultivated by many years of sword ex ercise. His handshake Is one that Is not soon forgotten, and when he greets a visitor with a handshake they say at court, "His Majesty has made an other lasting Impression." This grip. It Is only fair to say, he reserves for strong men. For the op posite sex he has a hand that is js soft as velvet and a courtesy that is elegant Vagaries of Memory. What Is remembered depends, of course, much on individual tempera ment or intellectual tendency, but the Incidents are always In the nature of milestones. Thousands of competent persons can never recollect a date, even when the day was of importance to themselves or when, as, for Instance, wfien preparing for examination, they had specially tried to remember ac curately. An enormous number of people are embarrassed through life by a difficul ty In recollecting faces, yet kings, po licemen and artists rarely or never for get one. The present writer has reached the age when the difficulty of recalling names quickly becomes an noying, yet he never forgets the num ber of a bouse or shop if he has once heard or seen It The broad truth is, says the London Spectator, that mem ory Is almost as individual a possession as character and that the historian when quoting personal testimony must make up his own mind whether he Is listening to Herodotus or to Mr. . Every reader can fill In the blank. Common sense extracts more solid comfort from life than genius does. SUMMER COLDS Produce Chronic Catarrh. X1 7',' i. 2 'S Madame Isabella KUea Itareaa, Madame Isabella Ellen Raveas, Life Governor Grand Lodge of Free Masons of England, In a letter from Hotel Sara toga, Chicago, Hi., says: "This summer while traveling I contracted a most persistent and an noylng cold. . My head ached, my eyes and nose seemed constantly running, my lungs were sore and I lost my ap petite, health and good spirits. Doc tors prescribed for me all manner of pills and powders, but all to no pur pose. 'l advised with a druggist and he spoke so highly of a medicine called Peruna, that he Induced me to try my first bottle of patent medicine. How ever, It proved such a help to me that I soon purchased another bottle and kept on until I was entirely well." Madame Isabella Ellen Bavcas. Summer colds require prompt treat ment. They are always grave, and sometimes dangerous. The prompt ness and surety with which Peruna acts In these cases has saved many lives. A large dose of Peruna should be taken at the first appearance of a cold in summer, followed by small and oft repeated doses. There ia no other remedy that medical science can furn ish, eo reliable and quick in its action as Peruna.
