The mavor has ardice and thus his influence will tackled a big job but he isa giant in many ways and may be able to win out. Noah's ark is said to have been disco cm the top of a mountain nvay tip-ncHT the Arctic circle, in Alaska. It is described as being petrified and is said to answer the description given , in the bible to a nicety.' : Whether or not the fellow who originated the 6tory is a petri fied' liar or only an ordinary space writer is not stated. If he is the latter he certainly has great future possibilitiei if he continues to practice: At the Illinois State Prohibition convention the other day a call was made for voluntary contribu tions to the campaign fund. In less than 0 minutes more than $5,000 was thrown on the stage by the enthusiastic delegates. Out here ia Oregon we often see politi eians throw their dollars on the bar but this thing of tossing them on the Btage, as we would boquets to a favorite actress, is a, new wrin. kle. - Si commission of engineers has Been- appointed to examine the Cbfetnbia. river at Celilo and make " a report on the proposed canal and locks. Thia is-encouraging but it is also slightly discouraging when we remember how slow such mat ; ters generally move. Eastern Ore gon, eastern Washington and Idaho will never advance as they should until the river is opened and it is to be hoped the work of this com mission will be a potent factor in hastening the work. A western Kansas story shows tioning names.- "It was in a poker game at Colby. The sheriff of Lo gan county had been steadily los ing to the treasurer of Ellis county The treasurer of Ellis county had the misfortune to be posessed of but one eye, and he was a little clumsy at ' handling- the cards. .After a play in which the treasurer took a big pot from the sheriff the sheriff said: 'Gentlemen I ain't a namm' no names, but if some of you don't quit raisin' cards from the floor he'll get his other eye knocked out'" be weakened. At the same time he must not offend the fond parent for that means the loss of an ad vertisement or moral support and the average country editor needs all the support he can get He must hold up the county com- missioners, or lose me county printing. He must not fail to mention the lawyer who won his case or the doctor who cured his patient Every waking moment must be devoted to news getting bui it must be the kind of newt- that does not offend. The success fill country editor is a diplomat. He must laugh with those who re joice and weep- with those who grieve. He must mention and elaborate upon the candy pull giv en by the poor as well as the swell reception given bv the rich. He mut print dodgers for the Metho dist church as well as for the Epis copalian at a reduced price and give a free notice of the strawberry festival. The churches of a smal community put their religion on a begging and alms taking basis. He must mention his rankest enemy. support the party nominees and look pleasant 'Re is expected to do more for nothing than any man in the community, and the man for whom he does the most will in variably 6ay that he is only taking the paper because he wants to help the town along. He is expected to trade cut his advertising space and his job work But for all this he is, himself great deal to blame. A self-respect ins country editor can make the community respect him. He can compel the churches to pay him as they do the butcher, the grocer or the baker. He can make the poli tician take him into account and l . rTc aierCnaTiTatixF A Nebraska paper mentions a Swede farmer of that state who has recently returned from a visit to the land of his birth.
