He will make a long, if not a strong candidate. The Globs offio is fully equip ped to turn out candidate cards on short notice and in a neat and ar tistic manner. Prices reasonable. Hive every voter In the county a card and he will not forget that your name is on the ticket Senator Money, of Mississippi, was put off a street car in Washing ton D. C. the other, day for refusing to pay bis fare and in the melee Ffabbed the conductor with jsV- pen knife. Senator Clarke, of Montana, also" kicked up a row because a po liceman .Vented to arre6t him for "scorching" V:t lU V- automobile in the same city. If the capitol could borrow Condon's marshal for a few weeks he might bring some of their rough element to time. George Chamberlain, the demo cratic nominee for governor opened his campaign in Baker City the oth er night, and among other things, he said: "If my opponents can place their finger on any dishonorable or corrupt official act of mine with any shade or coloring of truth. will retire from this canvass and re sign the nomination." That is a pretty broad challenge for a mod ern politician to make unless he knows his position to be absolutely unassailable and if Chamberlain is not "called" it will tend to materi ally strengthen his position with the people. The people are getting weary of political grafters and the man who can boldly make such an assertion and not be proven a bluffer by bis opponents will prove a hard man to beat even if his party is in "the minority. - THE PORTAGE ROAD. Portland at last seems to be taking an interest in the por tm road at - Celilo and the 3 i ndications are favorable to its early completion. Walla Walla and Lewiston capitalists are interested in the project and their plan, is to take over the interests of Paul Mohr in the present property and give him stock in the new company to the value of his present holdings. It is claimed that the road can eas ily be put in ope rat'on within four months and that freight rates will be reduced from 25 to 50 per cent. If carried out this project will mean much for Eastern Oregon and it will no doubt be tbe means of hur rying rail communication between Condon and the Columbia river. LOWELL VS. FURNISH. Hon. Stephen A. Lowell ia being roasted for his recent letter pledg ing bis support to Chamberlain the democratic nominee for governor. Judge Lowell is a life long republi can and was a prominent aspirant for the nomination which Mr. Fur nish landed, and this fact is taken as a text by many partisan writers and spouters who are busy just now VUlitying wwm as a smy villifying Lowell lieaa ana a traitor to nis party, xi Members are requested to send in an Mr. Lowell's only reason for refus-1 account of their donations to the aece ing to support Mr Furnish is the : tary by the 20th f each month so she fact that Furnish Becured the nom-! hve tin' t0 hHV? thetu P"b!ehi it kr ii. , i t; i the last of each month. l nation tutu uuiyeu wantoi uio w- eition ia certainly discreditable, to eay the least, but if his reasons are &s he etateB In his letter, that Fur nish secured the nomination and , . i .l t. hopes to secure an election through rt ' 1 I a. a eorrnpt influences and by corrupt . .. . . . . methods he is to be commended. a I rr a true patriot and an honorable citizen. ' His action may not be good politics from tbe etand point of future personal preferment in his uartvbut we take Judge Lowell to be a man who will throw politi cal advancement to the winds where it conflicts with what he believes to i be right. .The number of men who place principle above party is in creasing wonderfully fast in these days and in them lies the only, hope of the perpetuation of republican institutions. 1 .
