Presulent Roosevelt va reported as being nr ardent advocate of goerent ewnership of the tele graph. Advices from Washington itate that he has requested aaiem tr of Congress to introduce a bill providing for the purchase of the telegraph lines by the government aul thtdr operation i: connection with the present postal system. Without questioning the presi dent right motive in this matter it may be suggested that the pres ent i not an opportune time for the acquisition of the telegraph lines fcy th government for the reason that the Slarconi system of wireless telegraphy just now promises to revolutionize that business. If the wireless method of transmitting intelligence proves the success that row seem 8 almost certain, the old lines- of poles and wire would soon prove a "dead horse" on the hands of the government. . Purchase of the old lines, at this time would savor a little of an effort on the part of Congress and ' the president to thrust the government into the breach between the tele graph companies and possible loss occasioned by the perfection of the Marconi, or some other, wireless fystem. The government has never before been in a hurry to take over the telegraph lines, when a better and ebeaper system was unthoughtof, so it would better make haste slow ly jost now. Better wait awhile ou Marconi and give him all possible assistance in bis researches and, if his system proves a success, let the government secure control of it for the benefit pf all the people. THE RAILROAD MERGER. The Eugene Register favors the consolidation of the trans-couti-nental railway lines on the ground that the combine cannot last That paper says: - . "We believe if the consolidation was left to stand as it is long enough the result would be the building of one or more additional trans-continental lines to the coast and there would naturally result a competi tion that would force freight rates down to a more reasonable figure and prove a great blessing to the Pacific coast." . Tbe Register fails to explain what there is to prevent any new lines, which may be built to compete with the Northwestern Securities Co'a. lines, from being swallowed op and controlled by that power ful corporation whenever they should come to interfere with its business and profits. The Union Pacific, Northern Pacific and Great Northern were formerly "compet ing lines" but when the-men who controlled them found that compe tition did not pay so well as con solidation and co-operation, they consolidated. Just so with the steel manufacturers and all the other great business interests of the country. ' They have all learned that by pooling their interests and uniting thejr plants under one Eianagement they can produce goods more cheaply than under the old system of competition, thus insuring greater profits on their in restment. Should new lines of road be Imilt to this coast, more than are needed to handle the trans-continental business to good advantage and even if they should retain their in dependence and continue to be operated as "competing lines," they would only be an additional bu r den on tbe producers and consum ers of tbe conn try because from their pockets mast come, ultimate ly, tbe cost of construction, the in terest on bonded indebtedness and tbe operating expenses of every railway. Consolidation and co-operation of great business interests are effect ed as a business proposition be- Had To Conquer Or Die. "I wan just abont gune," writes Mrs. BotMi Eichr1non. of Laurel Springs. N. O., "I ha & Consumption eo bad that the ljt doctors siii I could not live more than a month, but I begun to use Dr. King's New Discovery and was wholly eared by seven" bottlee and am now etont moi well." It's art unrivaled life-saver in Consumption, Pneumonia, La Grippe wl Emm-hilts; infallible for Coughs, 4Ii.V A&thtrm, Hay Fever, Croup or Whnopinc Giitifh. Guaranteed bottles 10 cents and f I 00. Trial bottles free at canee it pays the owners and because modern conditions demand it, and for them to revert to the old system of competition, which they have thoroughly tried and found wanting, would be a 6tep backward. Tbe railway mercer may be a ! blessing in. disguise but the bless j ing is more likely to come through ' the channel of government owner ship, as outlined in a recent edittv ! rial in the Oregonian, than by the ' retrograde movement as predicted J by the Register. Ainslee's Magazine is authority for the statement that thirty-four .New York women own jewels, used for their personal adornment, winch aggregate in value the snugjsum of $22,250,000.00. And yet there are 'cranks and croakers everywhere who insist that the country is not prosperous. The C. P. 8. We know of no way in which we can be of more service to our readers than to tell them of something that will be of real good to them. For this reason we want to aquaint tbem with what we con sider one of the very best remedies on the market for coughs, colds, and that alarming complaint, croup. We refer to Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. We have used it with such good results in our family so long that it has become a household necessity. By its prompt use we haven't any doubt but that it has time and again prevented croup. The testimony is given upon our own exper ience, and we suggest that our readers, especially those who havesmallchildren, alwavs keep it in their homes as a safe guard againstcroup. Camden S; C.) Ladies' Pullman Ordinary Sleepers The tourist travel between the East and the raoific Coast has rearheJ enor mous proportions in the last few years, ami calls for a special class of equipment. To meet this demand the Pullman Co. has issued from its shops what it tech nically calls the "Pullman Ordinary Sleeper." These cars appear similar to the regular sleepers beiiiK built on the same plan, but not furnished with the same elegance. They are equipped with mattresses, blaufeets, shifts, pillows, pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes, ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to be furnished by the passenger. Each car has a stove for making tea and collee and doing "light housekeeping", and each section can befitted with an adjust able table. A uniformed porter accom panies each car, his business being to makeup berths; keep the car clean, and look after the wants and comforts of the passengers. In each of the trains which are dispatched dni I r from Portland by the O. Ii. A N. Co. is to be found one of these "Pullinun Odin irv Sleepers". The car attached to the "Chicago-Portland Special" goes through to Chicego without change, and the one in the "Atlantic Express" runs to Kansas City without change, Passftigi-rB in this car for Chicago change to a similar carat granger. Much of the first class travel inlying carried in these cars, the rates lieing lower, and the service nearly rqual to that in the palace sleepers.
