Mr Williamson Is one of Eastern Oregon's most foremost citizens and will no. doubt put op a strong fight for the place. ' " Nothing-.uufofteeen ' happening Chauncy M. DepSw and Miss May Talmer will be married on Christ mas day. Of course Chauncy may die of old age before that time or his fiancee may langh herself to death over some of his after-dinner stories, but we will hope for the best. Portland has done nobly in start ing the Lewis and Clarke ball to rolling. A nucleus of 1300,000, se cured in one forenoon, is pretty good. Now should the whole State and tbe entire Northwest, stand to Portland's back and put in their best licks to make the Fair a great success. Nothing short of the best should satisfy tis in the year 1905. Portland is to have a drydock 'and the Lewis and Clarke Centen nial is assured. Hurrah for Port landl Eastern Oregon extends the glad hand and is willing to back her up and help her out in these big undertakings. If it were not for those pesky rocks in the river at Ce lilo we would cover Portland over with trade in a short time. WHAT THE U VOL GRO liERS wm a a m The wool growers of Umatilla " county met at Pendletoh a few days ago to electa delegate to the Nation al WoolgrowersV-convention- that meets in Chicago the first week of December, and the delegate whom . they authorized to represent them stated that tbe instructions which he received as to the demands of the sheepmen were: , .: "First, we 'sheepmen are opposed to the leasing of the public range lands of the government, and 'we will oppose lor the reason that it will not - be. inf favo of the mall owner aud will tend to retard the developement of the country and hold it back for long periods. ' "Second, we sheepmen are in fa vor of the enactment by congress of a law . requiring that all goods in which is any shoddy shall be brand ed by the manufacturer, that the people may see what they are pur chasing and not think it is wool when it is shpddy. . LONE ROCK. Died At his residence in Lone Rock, at 9.30 P. M. Nov. 28 1901, of heart failure David Leroy Patterson. Prof. Patterson had been ailing ever since he came to this place which was about nine months ago, but had been confined to his bed only a couple of months. He was born in Danville, Vs., 46 years ago. His par ents died several years ago, be being their only child. He was a member of the Masonic Order and also a member of the Episcopal church. Faneral services were held in the M. E. Church by Rev. Henderson, the pupils of onr public school marching from the school house to the church. A large concourse of friends followed tbe remains to the cem etery. A man by the' name of Jenkins who brought a car load of abort horn balls oat here from Illinois a few weeks ago passed through here on bis return home with a car load of mules, some of which he bought in the Fossil country and some iu this place. He will ship them from Ileppner to his home in Illinois" Mr.. Little of Arlington has finished painting the new school bouse and be has done a neat and substantial job. ' Rev. C. L.
