From all the testimony which l.iia been adduced by army ollieers a..d men in the rankswho should know what they are talking about the law abolishing the army can teen seems to be a failure as a tem- j.erance.neasure. yUnnlrankenm is t-aid to prevail among the men than before and low sal ens on the outskirts of army posts have mnl- tiplied rapidly and are nourishing j;Ke me proveruiai green nay iree. The law seems to have been pass ed as a sop to the Women's Chris- t ia n, Temperance Union, and other temperance organizations, because the congressmen know that these jefvple have considerable political influence and that isa!l theaverage! politician eeds to know or think he knows -to determine his coure hi matters of non-partizan legisla tion. Like all other attempts to make men good by statute the anti canteen law is a failure. In the canteen only beer and light wines were kept and the profits went into the mess fund to furnish extras for the soldier's table- In the out ride saloons any old thing in the way of rot gut and tangle-foot is sold and the profits so far as the soldier is concerned goes glimmer ing. Very few Congressmen and Senators w ho voted for bill would for a moment consider the proposi tion of voting to abolish the high toned bar in the Capital where they procure their liquid refreshments w hen Congress is in session but that is different 3'ou know, Mr. Congressman must have his toddy close at hand to brace him up for his trying work as- a national law maker, while the soldier but d n the soldier, the national defender take his beer away, reduce the deli cacies of his table, turn him over to the outside publicist to be drugged and robbed anything to help give Mr. Congressman a better political pull. And we all pat him on the back and shout for him and vote for him if we belong to the same party that owns him. It is announced that Portland is to have it new daily newspaper and that it will be backed by V. R. Hearst the millionaire newspaper owner. The new , paper will be known as the Journal and will be Democratic in politics. The plant will be the most extensive and modern in the Northwest and will excel, in some respects, that of the San Francisco Examiner. The same nevv3 service used by the oth er Hearst papers will be used by the new paper. , '"Everv editor makes enemies," remarks the Milton Eagle. "A little sq iibaiaud at no one iti par ticular, will bit some hollow-headed individual, and he at once declares himself "agin" the paper. . The paper may have given him many complimentary notices, but the im aginary thrust puts bim on his dignity, and he at once establishes h'inself as a criUc, but he hasn't enough nerve to go to the editor with his supposed grievance. Just Jiotico and you will see that the men who are "agin" their home paper are, as a rule, men who would not be missed if they would leave thecom- munity forever. On every question of local interest the home paper stands ready to make a fight for tho best interest of the greatest number of eitizeus at its back. A YOUNG LADY'S LIFE SAVED At Panama, Colombia, by Chamber lain's Colic, Cholera and Diar rhoea Remedy. Dr. Clins. II. He then ly sincere, for it is manifest that what Mr. Morgan really meant,! and what a great many employer's and prominent business men be lieve, is: "There is no time to arbi trate; there is nothing to arbitrate." This very nearly sums up the situation from the employers' point of view. They say iu effect and in action : "We have a right to employ labor on the best terms we can make; on the terms that labor, to live, must take. We have a right to the un influenced benefit of the law ofj65 miles from the scene of his crime supplv and demand. Labor is a whens u is supposed he is hiding. It is j-. y' 3 . ii- i I a thinly settled, mountainous country commodity. We need it. Webuyj ' , , ... tl nvor thfim ami if mat- Ita iimiilr tt that commodity as cheaply as we can. We need skilled, intelligent workmen and therefore it is to our interest to pay fair wages, what we and the world consider good wages; but when we do that our duty to labor is fully done. As to our profits that is none of labor's busi ness nor the public's business. We have a right to the reward of skill, brains, education, thrift, foresight and risks run. All men are not created equal. All history denies ihnt m'llir nrnnncitinn Tn Jnnmro y i r a into our private business is undem ocratic, illegal. To say that we shall pay more than the market price for labor would'be confiscation of our wealth and it is unconstitu tional. We oppose labor unions because their tendency is to become overbearing, to demand more and more. If they are recognized, en couraged, tolerated, legalized, they will take first a little,- then more, after awhile half, later two-thirds, finally all our profits, and leave us bankrupt. Labor organized is arbi trary and unreasonable. Its success means defeat and destruction for us, and therefore we fight the union as represented by Mr. Shaffer. We do so in self preservation and that is the first law of nature." Stops the Cough and works off the Cold. Laxative Bromo Quinine Tablets cure a cold in one day, No Cure, uo Pay. Her two little boys, aged 6 an I 3 years, desperately fought the hu man tie ml who was assaulting their mottTert with all their tiny strength, and he brutaly beat them off. He stay ed several hour;, drinking heavily, and then rode to the McAllister ranch, a few miles np the river, where be had been employed for several weekea breaking horses. There he was seen, in bed drnnk, Monday morning, by Henry Heidtman and Nat Shown, who were buying cattle and had not then heard of the crime. Deiore arose and soon after left for his home on Beaver creek, about capture Dciure bnt Sheriff Keetou, who u out after him with a posse of men, is confident that he wil get him. Deputy Constabfe G. W. Stone and Herbert Puitt of Mitchell were out after Deiore a few days, but lost his trail and returned. Sheriff Congleton of Crook county was telephoned to, and is doing his best to aid in D lore's capture. Deiore is about 40 years of age, and it is said looks very much like a full-blood Indian. The woman is heartbroken, and every since the ocenrrene moans and bewails her fate, tier husband, who was at Summit Prairie, was notified and has- tened home Monday fveiiiug. When about ten miles from home, he met rk..l,.. .. .i k:. ltciuic troinpiug, nun itriugiiiAi'u mil, aa the brute who had assaulted his wife. An altercation ensued, and as Unsworth advanced on him, Deiore leveled his gun. Unsworth, being unarmed, was powerless, and went on home to ascer tain the condition of his family, while Deiore sped toward the Beaver creek, hills. Feeling all over the county is intense against Deiore, and should others secure him before the sheriff summary justice may be handed out to him, as the air is full of deplorable talk of burning or hanging the vile w retch. SheriffKeeton is determned to capture him, and bring him in alive if possible. FopsII Journal The Gl'-be learns from V. E. Officer, of this place, who knows Deiore well, that this is the second crime of this kind which he has been guilty of in the past two years. His other victim was a German woman in Crook county, who he lassoed near her home, overpowered and outraged, lie is certainly deserving of death, the speedier the better. . E. McConnell. Pullman Ordinary Sleepers The tourist travel between the East and the Pacific Coast has reached enor mous proportions in the last few years, and calls for a special class of equipment. To meet this demand the Pullman Co. has issued from its shops what it tech nically calls the'Tullman Ordinary Sleeper," These cars appear similar to the regular sleepers being bnilt on the same plan, but not furnished with the same elegance. They are equipped with mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows, pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes, ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to be furnished by the passenger. Each car has a stove for making tea and coffee and doing "light housekeeping", and each section can befitted with an adjust able table. A'nniformed porter accom panies each car, his business being to make np berths; keep the car clean, and look after the wants and comforts of the passengers. In each of the trains which are dispatched daily from Portland by the O. K. & N. Co. is to be found one of these "Pullman Ordinary Sleepers". The car attached to the "Chicago-Port land Special" goes through to Chicego without change, and the one in the "Atlantic Express" runs to Kansas City without change. Passengers in this car for Chicago change to a similar carat Granger. Much of the first class travel is being carried in these cars, the rates being lower, and the service nearly equal to that in the palace slpepers. ferrates snd inn miormauon, includ ing folders' write to A.
