A pre liminary surwy of flw rotste has already been made and it is stated tiiatfehe CbmpMy may Ucide to Build the branch, this year. Such a road would- tap- s Htrge- are of eountryiivthe Mayville and Ferry Canyon 'sections amd would be of great advantage- to the fanners of : tiiose sectiouSi . It mar still be a q,uestionr however, whether tlx? Cuftrmtria Southern people will build a road iiU a hole-in-the ground that thef cannot hope to get out of or having built it, wheth er they will give a freigbtjrate that j will make the project a beneficial j ne to the wheat growers. There are a good many "ifV and "anda" about this railroad building busi ness and we can always tell better if it is a go after work has corn "Weced. One thing is sure; if the John Day branch of the Columbia Southern js built it will be of no benefit to Condon or May ville or lex or Arlington. It will cause a trading point to spring up at the terminus on the John Day which will supply the country tributary to it and will take just that much trade away from the towns above named. There were' sums peple in same f these towns who were deposed to poke fun a the project of the people of Gilliam county building a road "from Arl ington to Condon, which was first ftroached by the Gi.obk last winter, and some of those same people seemed to speedily change their views, when the survey was switch- from Arlington to the Blalock bide track. The change in feeling on the matter frouV the hearty enthusi- asm of last wirterAo the present apathy Bhows the effect of that witch. Sherman county is reported as leing out of debt, has nooutstand warrants and has $12D in' th vaults. Sherman county also has a good courthouse which cost about f 8,000 or $10,000. Gilliam county has no court house, and the trees in the county block look stu nted and distressed for lack of water ' which would cost the county $12 per year from the city water works. Gilliam county has a good chunk of a debt though and out standing eounty warrants galore, She also has a government which has been heralded far and wide for the past 10 or 12 years as being an economical one. The Ohio Democratic State Con vention last .week, which nominat ed James Kilbourne for governor incorporated some good things in its platform. : It declared for equality in taxation, the initiativeand refer endum in municipalities so far a? the granting of franchises is con cerned and against the free pass evil. The utterance upon this point is as follows. . "The acceptance of free passes or other favors from railroads by public officers or employers shall be made adequate ground for va cating the offices held by them." The platform futher demands the enactment and vigorous enforce ment of such laws as will effectual ly prevent monopolies and trusts. These and many other planks a long the same line are all right if they can only be carried out but the Ohio democrats will find they have a hard job on their hands even if they are successful at the , The Same Old Story. But a man should be willing to go a long ways in search of a very little truth if it is as im portant as we have been taught to believe it to be.- Telegram THE NET WAIST GIRL: The girls this summer are to wear the net waist, a garment so gauzy and transparent that one sees every pulsation of their dear little hearts. One who has inspect ed these new-fangled waists turns loose as follows: "The shirt-waist man and the net waist girl go hand in hand to- dayand all thepeoole year afteryear keep throwing their clothes away. The coat and the vest we laid to rest and where is the Heecy shawl? And clothes get thinner and few er what will be the end of It all? Oh, what will the shirt-waist man take next from the thiugs he has to wear? And what will the net- waist girl throw off her shoulders now so bare? . Pullman Ordinary Sleepers -The tonrist travel between the East and the Pacific Coast has reached enor mous proportions in the last few years, and calls for a special class of equipment. To meet this demand the Pullman Co. has issued from its shops what it tech nically calls the'ToIlman Ordinary Sleeper." These cars appear similar to the regular sleepers being built on the same plan, but not furnished with the same elegance. They are equipped with mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows, pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes, ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to be furnished by the passenger. Each car has a stoe for making tea and coffee and doing "light housekeeping", and each section can befitted with an adjust able table. A uniformed porter accom panies each car, bis business being to make op berths ; keep the car clean, and look after the wants and comforts of the passengers. In each of the trains which are dispatched daily from Portland by the O. K. & N. Co. is to be found one of these "Pullman Ordinary Sleepers". The car attached to the "Chicago-Portland Special" goes through toChicego without change, and the one in the "Atlantic Express" runs to Kansas City without change. Passengers in this car for Chicago change to a similar carat Granger. Much of the first class travel .is being carried in these cars, the rates being lower, and the service nearly equal to that in the palace sleepers.
