Spring, es pecially Italians, is unprecedented. They are coming into this country by tens of thousands. Unless they are paupers or diseased, or it can be ehown that that they arrive under a contract to labor a thing almost impossible to show they must be admitted. Year after year," decade after decade, thoughtful and patri otic people have pleaded with Con gress to enact more stringent immi gration laws, so that we would not be overrun with these European cheap laborers, but in vain. There were people of the same nationali ties here who bad votes too easily acquired. Even their interests re quired a check to be put to this wholesale immigration. Every new arrival is a cj:npetitor, if not of a native American, of one of his own people alrea lr here. As to Ameri cans, they were long ago pretty well crowded out of the lower ranks of public employment. Scarcely one will be found doing manual labor in any of our larger cities. Not only so, but the great corpo rations and trusts recruit the ranks of workingmen annually by tens of thousands of these foreigners, hop ing thereby so to fill the labor mar ket that labor cannot successfully organize to protect itself. Of course everybody understands that many foreigners make good American citizens. We can scarcely admit too many of those who go out into our forests and upon our un used lands and make homes and farms; but this class is the miuority of those who land on our shores. Most of those coming from Italy, for instance, are laborers, looking for employment, and never expect to do any thing else. They come because"times are prosperous" here now; but how long will they be so if we allow an unrestricted flood of these laborers to wash up into and through all our cities? In justice, not only to native born Americans, but to immigrants who have been admitted during past years, there should be higher, broader and surer gates on both sidesofour continent against the influx of laborers who care nothing about American citizenship and generally use it when gained, to vote for the worst men nominated for office. Williams who has been down with the grippe has about recovered. John- M. Brown recently sold 1500 yearlings for 2.15 a head. Shearing has commenced at George Perry's corral. Several bands of sheep have started for the mountains and the cattle and horsemen are on the warpath and have posted notices for 10 miles aronnd the foothills warning the sheepmen to keep offor take the consequeuees. J. B. Goff visited Condon Monday. Bob Johnson got back from his sheep inspection tour Monday. AUCTION SALE OF HORSES. Canty a former resident of Arlington, and well known in Oregon, disappeared from his place of business in Mountain Home Idaho, about five weeks ago. It is reported that he step ped out of his door in his bare head And without a coat on and disappeard. It is thi light by some that he drowned him self in a reservoir which is near his place. Some think he was demented, others think he will turn up in some other location. His wife recently return ed to Portland where her family resides. To meet this demand the Pullman Co. has issued from its shops what it tech nically calls tlie'Tullman Ordinary Sleeper." These cars appear similar to the regular sleepers leing built on the same plan, but not furnished with the same elegance. . They are equipped with mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows, pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes, ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to be furnished by the passenger. Each car has a stove for making tea and coffee and doing "light housekeeping", and each Bectioncan befitted with an adjust able table. A uniformed porter accom panies each car, his business being to make Dp berths; keep the car clean, and look after the wants and comforts of the passengers. In each of the trains which are dispatched daily from Portland by the O. li. & N. Co. ia to be found one of these "Pullman Ordinary .Sleepers".
