Tlk Weakly Annex has been 'suf fering for some time' with an ag gravate! attack of Ananias fever, and if it latest spasm is to be taken as a criterion by which to judge of its present condition, it is reasonable to Suppose that it has suffered a relapse. The Annex started in a few weeks ago on a campaign of falsehood and elander, and as fast as it has been called down and cornered in one lie, direct or5 implied, it has forth with proceeded to get on its nest again and hatch out another. h its latest attempt as a disciple of Ananias, the Annex says: ' . ; "The editor of the Globe has, on oc casions too numerous to mention, nsed his columns to circulate unfounded re ports about some of our most responsible citizens, or has opened hia columns to irresponsible persons, to publish mis leading and libelous matter under some nor, -ie-plume, and before the injured person would be allowed any space in which to reply, he would be required to coutribute exborbitant sums of cash for the same. "If the Globe man is troubled with a poor memory we can prompt it a little by naming a few of his victims." Why did the Annex not go ahead and name some of these alleged Victims" of the Globe's cupidity? Will it do so in its next issue, or will it do as it has been in the habit of doing drop its latest lie and contrive a new one? The Globe hereby desires to challenge this journalistic Ananias to produce one iota of evidence to back od or establish the above 7 charge. Name any citizen, "re sponsible" or otherwise, who has been wronged by the Globe and then charged ''exorbitant 6Uins" for 6nace in which to reply. Name some of the "non-de-plumea" over which "irresponsible persons" have published "misleading and libelous matter" in this paper. Give the public some quotations from such articles, or at least give a hint of ' the subject-matter contained there in. Name an individual who has ever been charged one cent for space in the Globe except when such space has been used for cam paign matter or business advertis ing. We insist on the Annex going a little farther into this matter and refreshing our memory as to these charges.' If it fails to do so we ml be obliged to retain our present position, and insist that in pub lishing the language quoted above the Weekly Times is an unvarnish ed, pusillanimous, . malicious liar If it desires to refresh its memory before attempting to refresh ours. we will state that our files are at its disposal at any time. The Globe will Btate that it has always adhered to the policy of charging for space used in its col unins by the candidates of either political party during the campaign It expects to continue to do so, and if this be "libelous" they had better make the most of it. The Globe would not give space to a farther discussion', of this matter if we could discover any . individual who will assume responsibility for the falsehoods which continue to ap pear in the Times, but as the man ager (?) of that paper has refused to enlighten us as1 to where the responsibility rests and. as we are eompelled to defend ourself against the attack of an impersonal cor poration, we can only do bo in this public manner. the world, briefly notices our up risings and downsittings, and sor rowfully records our exit. 'We are all more or less gen- eniiiv tmire- mo uanivit the creature should not be ungrate ful to hi creator. Without his generous and enthusiastic lalwrs most of us would never have been here; and, when he tires of us, most of us will return to private life and amid rural scenes propi tious for secret meditation and silent prayer. Working night and day during the campaign, when the election is over and the time comes for the distribution of the loaves and fishes now vulgarly called 'pie' by some strange lapse of memory he is generally forgot ten." ;. . : . aud T, A. A portage railway will be u?e.l to haul the barges around the falls smi into the Columbia below,' ben the boats will I towed to Portland and the IVitic Coast poluta for shipment to the Oriental markets. The steamer Wiling, which has been Ivingon a rocky bar 20 feet above water a few miles below Pasco, is now being overhauled preparatory to launching for the upper river traffic. GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP The Canadian government has eeided to purchase all telegraph ine3 in tne dominion, paying therefor $25,000,000. The World savs: "Outside of the United States the movement of all English-speaking peoples is toward either the out-and-oat ownership or the iron- handed control of all public util ities. Especially is this true of the are self-sovernins colonies of o j Great Britain. Canadian railways are partly owned by the Govern ment, and those not owned are rigidly controlled by Parliamentary aw. The new Commonwealth of Australia has none but state-owned railroads. In New Zealand the government not only owns all the railroads but operates them on the principle that it is not desirable that they should yield a profit but only to make them ot the utmost service to the people. The Prime Minister of New Zealand has de clared that any profit over 3 per cent on the traffic must immediate ly be wiped out by improvements in the service or by lower fare and freight rates. '"Henry Demarest Lloyd in his Newest England' declares that 'such a thing as a rebate or dis crimination in favor of one shipper against another is unknown in New Zealand.' He shows that the rail- r6ad service works well because it is based on a non-political civil service system. The Civil-Service Board in New South Wales can only be removed by a concurrent majority vote of both houses of Parliament, and its authority is such, says Mr. Lloyd, that not a single foreman can be transferred from one job to another without its consent. In England itself, where the Government ownership of tele graph lines is. more than a quarter of a century old,? and where the railroads are forced to run cheap working-people's trains at hours and fares arbitrarily fixed by Parliament, and are otherwise regu lated very much as if they were Government-' property, the same condition precedent of a civil service out of the reach of the politicians has been long since secured." From Record. R. U. Robinson has been confirmed postmaster at Arlington after a long and bloodless figbt. lie has been in charge of the office since last November. The Arlington Lumber Company have sold in the neighborhood of 20,000 feet of lumber for building to be erected at Condon, and anticipate a laree trade from Condon and the Ferry Canyon j country this spring. Homesteaders are coming rapidly and it's onfy a matter of time until we see a large population in this section. Al McConnell called on the Arlington Lnmber Company last week and placed his order for lumber to be used in the erection of a store building in Ferry Canyon. The store and post office will be located near the schoolhouse and just opposite J. J. Wasson's ranch, and will be a source of convenience to tbe many flourishing farmers of that district. Smith will be pleased to learn that he bas recovered from his recent severe illness and it is thought he will soon be able to resume his duties at the warehouse.
