Rundle Palmer of this place 1 a daughter of Mr, Musgrovo, nd the old gentleman will probably spend most of the winter here visiting hi childron. He is a pioneer of Oregon, having oome to the state in 1850 from Missouri via the overland route and the California mines. He may decide to secure so in Ferry Canyon land and set tle in that neighborhood permanently. A Quiet Wedding. 'Mr. N. li Cuven, of Forry Canyon, and Mlaa Grace L. Christmas Entertainment One 6f the moHt auccetmful alfnira of the kind ever given In Condon was the Christmas tree and entertainment at the Latter Day Saint church Monday even ing.' A large crowd wns in attendance, every inch of floor spline being occupied, and the aiiinnihcpuioiit "standing room only" would have been appropriate sometime tmforo theentertalnment com menced. Elder Harris called the con gregation to order and offered a few well chosen remarks which were particularly appropriate for the occasion. An excel lent program of vocal and instrumental music, recitations, dialogues, etc., wris then rendered in a particularly clever manner, reflecting innch credit on the yonng people who took part. 8pnce for bids a separate mention of the individual performers, but It is only right to say that all acquitted themselves nobly. After the program, which was cut short on account of the crowded condition of the building, Mr. snd Mrs. Santa Claus made their appearance and began the distribution of Chrlstmargoodain whole sale quantities. Every child and most of the older people was remembered, and every little heart went pitty-pat as the gift and goodie were passed around The occasion wa certainly a success ful one. But the Latter Day (taints will have to hire the largest hall in town for the next Christina entertainment they have, it they wish to accommodate the people. Christmas at Ferry Canyon. A Christmas tree was given at the Nelson school house in Ferry Canyon Monday evening, which was a grand success in every sense of the word. A fund of about $20,00 was raised in the neighborhood to provide sweetmeats and good things for general distribution, and in addition to this the tree was loaded down with private gifts and memento of the Yule-tide aeaaon. An excellent program of musical and literary selec tion wa rendered by the yonng people of the neighborhood, after which Santa appeared and slung presents and gocd things in every direction. At midnight splendid supper was served, after which a social dance was enjoyed, the proceed going to the purchase of new desk for the school. This wa the first Christmas entertainment ever given in the district, and much credit is due Prof. II. A. ftcoggin, the popular teacher, who took the initiative in making and carry ing out tbe arrangement. The Beat Plaster. . A pleasant time for the children of the town and neighborhood occurred; at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Con gregational church. A good sixed crowd wa present and tbe tree was loaded with sweetmeats and presents. A short program of first rate music and recita tion by tbe children wa much enjoyed by those present. The ladiea who were at the bead ot tbe affair are to be con gratulated on Ita success. Christmas time is good for all of ns. It jars us loose from the more sordid pursuits of life, at least for a brief season, and give or a taste of that true happi ness which come only from onr efforts for tho happinessof others. For an Open River, A rccenP dispatch from Washington, to the Spokane'-Review eays : The secretary of war bas transmitted to the honse the report ot the chief of engineers upon the examination and snrveyof the Columbia river between the foot of Tbe Dalles rapids and the head of Celilo Falls, Ore. and Washing ton, with a view to the construction of a canal and a lock to overcome the ob structions to navigation, authorized by the last river and harbor act. The esti mated cost of the work is given as $3,009,371, or in round numbers $1000,- 000. Captain Hart, who made the sur vey, reports that the Work is one of public importance worthy of undertaking for the United States, but in connection with the advisability of beginning the undertaking at thi time be calls atten tion to the reports in favor of a portage road around the obstructions, wblcb could be completed at one-tenth the cost of a canal and in half the time. He ay that such a road would determine the futnre commerce and indicate tbe capacity of tbe permanent improvement required. But if there is objection to the owner ship of such road by the United State he recommends the esrjy Improvement by means of canals. The chief of engin eers makes no specific recommendation.
