Thos. For sale by The Hudson Pharmacy. C. W. Crosfield, mgr. The man who orders buckwheat cakes for breakfast, although aware that that article of diet has seen long and faithful service, will prob ably be surprised to learn just how far back the cultivation of buck wheat on Manhattan island dates. George K. Holmes, assistant .(.(iLlImm, s.f ilnflrtmAnt. . , . , i . . I Coudon, Or., Nov. 12, 1900, agriculture, in a phamplet on the i "Progress of Agriculture in the United States," says that the first cultivation of buckwheat on Man hattan island was in 1025 or 1620. From the same source it is learned that the first yield of Indsan corn, or maize, in any considerable quan tity produced in the United States by people of English blood was that of 40 acres in the Jamestown colony in 1609. W heat was first sown in Massa chusetts as early as 1602, and it was first cultivated in Virginia in 1611. Rye, in New England, dates back to 1643, and perhaps to 1630, and oats and barley to Cosnald's colony in 1602. . It will probably surprise a good many persons to know that Ply mouth colony cultivated potatoes as early as 1629. Massachusetts raised one of its favorite products, beans, as early as 1602, but it was not until 42 years after that date that Manhattan and Virginia began their cultivation. ''Ten fair pippins," plucked from trees planted on Governors island, in the harbor of Boston, on October 10, 1639, were probably the first apples raised in this country, and the first nursery of young fruit trees ever planted here was that on Governor ; Endicott's farm in Salem, now Danvers, Mass., in 1640.
