Leaving out the question of wages, the grievances of the United Mine Workers, who are now on a strike to the number of over 100,000, if they detail facts, are real, shame ful and monstrous, and ought s,u.ohow to be remedied by the strong arm of the law, that should regard the rights of labor as just as sacred as those of capital, luese miners say and it is not yet dis puted that they are obliged to trade at the tuineow tiers' stores and pay extortionate prices for all they lave- to buy, Including the tools they work with; that while the legal ton is 2400 pounds they have , mine 3000 Bounds or more for a ton; that they have been compelled to wait for weeks for their small wages, while their families suffered; that they are charged high rent, and evicted if they cannot pay; and that, Bnally, while wages have not been increased, though amount ing on the average to scarcely $250 m year, the cost of living has been increased 20 per cent The matter of wages in such rases oueht to be settled by fair arbitration, that would do justice by both parties, and the one that would not arbitrate should be pre Eiimwl to be in the wrone, and treated bv the law accordingly We shall come to that during the next century. But in this case the public will be very slow to be lieve that these cooperating mine- owners and operators mostly big railroad corporations cannot at- ford to pay increased wages. They an and do arbitrarily increase the urice of coal whenever they please to do so, and thereby they freeze ,to death some- hundreds of poor jicople in Eastern cities every win ter. These syndicated coal mine ntf railroad magnates can make the public pay whatever price they choose to charge for coal, and so they have no excuse for paying starvation wages to the miners. It ia rather too much for these great corporations to keep the miners half-starved and half-clad, and their children in poverty, filth and ignorance, and at hard labor as noon as they are able to earn a limA- on one hand, and on the other hand compel the poor to pay n extortionate price for coal. Unless the mineowners and op erators can make a better defense than seems possible, the just sym pathy" of nine-tenths of the American- people will be with the miners in their effort. Telegram. Andy Greiner came to town Tuesday morning loaded to the ninzJe with a' real. bie. live bear story. On Monday the tbreshine outfit laid off on account f rain and some of the boys strayed off flown in the canyon, where, to their ear- prise (and perhsps horror), they en countered a savage looking black bear, They shinned back to the cook-boase nd gave the alarm, and after some trouble in convincing the older heads that they were not romancing, the whole outfit took the trair. which proved s tot ene before they were through with H. The bear was cute enongb to keep on the rocks and in the broth. and It was several hours before they got him herded out o the open where the cavalrv force could tret action. Paul Greiner led the troop and he soon rode up on bruin and roped hiin by the neck. Another rone was thrown on his bind feet and he was soon stretched out alle BAme cayuae calf. The bear was haltar br k) and led to Mr. Greiner's ranch, where he is at present star boarder. Andy says his hearehip is fond of pie and cake bnt turns np his nose at good white bread unless It is well spread with cow batter and honey. . - While Andy was reciting the above fiwts Dr. Nlcklin was an atteutivfl listen er and at the conclusion of Andy's story the doctor filed an atfldavit stating that he ia an expert on bear stories and, being given the floor, he proceeded to irove it. William Dorsey Skelly, the Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Skelly, died at 8:45 Wednesday evening after an illness of but a few hours' duration, aged about 19 months. The baby was taken sud denly ill at noon, and although medical aid was speedily summoned, nothing could be done to save the little sufferer and he passed away at the hour above stated.
