"The Central Navigation & Con struction Company has suspended work of construction. This ia the company promoted by Paul Mohr and backed by Spokane capi tal. Originally George Turner, V. J. Harris, Frank Graves and W.J. C. Wakefield were the heavy stock holders. It is said tnat Mr.. Harris is no longer with the company. Colonel I. N. Pay ton recently in fested in theetock of the company and is the president of the corpora tion. "The company has suffered a heavy loss in the stranding of the Billings. They no longer make a secret of it that, baTring the ma chinery and the possibility of using the patched-up hull for a wharf oai, the vessel is a total loss. To reconstruct her has cost the com pany $10,000. The losing of this sum at this time is a heavy blow, and it is hardly a secret that lead ing stockholders have been casting about for somebody or something on which to lay the blame. "Parties claiming to be ia the secrets of the company claim to have foreseen this suspension months ago, as the natural cul mination of a bitter fight among the stockholders that has its storm center in the management "The plans of the company were to build a railroad from a point below to a point above the obstruc tions in the Columbia river near The Dalles. Both above and below boats and barges were to be placed on the river to handle products of the farms. Rates far below those charged by the railroad were prom ised The suspension of operations on the portage road is a matter of deep regret to producers in the In land Empire, as that company had promised much in the way of re duced freight rates, which would have added materially to the farm ers' profits. There isonly one way, however, by which the producers can ever hope to be materially benefitted by the magnificent Co lumbia as a means of transporting their product" to tide water, and that will be by the opening of the Celilo rapid to navigation by the government for the benefit of the people. That will never be ac complished, however, so long as the big railroad companies control leg islation as they now do. "The public be damned" is their motto, monopoly of the transportation business ia their method, and the exploitation of the country is their manner of making the people pay all the expenses of running' the roads, which, are making a big profit. There i no longer any doubt but that the transportation companies have a "cinch" on the people of this big broad land. One of the incidents of the Pow ers trial in Kentucky call for se verest condemnation, says Louis F, Post, ia his paper, "The Public." The prosecuting attorney, in the course of bis summing up, turned from the jury to- the prisoner, and advancing step by step toward him until within two feet of his face, launched at him what the reporters called "a terrible arraignment" This is a common performance in criminal trials. But it is cowardly. The prisoner can make no reply, nor otherwise hold his assailant to account. Ho is shackled and gaged by the strong arm of the state. In these circumstances, though the prosecutor may be free to arraign the prisoner as bitterly as he chooses to the jury, a. personal as sault upon him directly is in viola tion of all principles of fair play. A judge sensitive to considerations of fairness would not allow it. In an editorial mention of a tem perance lecture recently delivered in that city, the Arlington Record iVf ."The deplorable thing about fitted by the teachings are nut pres ent. The reformers and ministers must got into the homes and oradles of the people, rather than- in the pulpits, the rostrum or the polls." We wonder how many "reformers and ministers'- the average man would allow to break into his home and the cradle of his progeny, be fore he would make a kick? If evils cannot be combatted in the pulpits, tho rostrum or the polls, there1 is-mighty little chance for this old world being renovated in the iiunitHl'mte future. Com mercial piracy and highway rob bery are on the samelevel. East Oregonian. Oregon has been honored by a request from the National Repub lican committee to Governor Geer to spend a month in Ohio as a cam paign orator.
