God pity the houseless, homeless poor in this old world of ours; the nmry earth pilgrim with no placa to call home. God made the beau tiful Bbtmng lakes, the winding rivers, the babbling brooks, crystal springs and waving forests. He gave them to man. He gave hitu countless millions of acres of fer tile land. Among his princely gifts were rich deposits of gold and ' eilver, lead and iron, tine and cop- tier' and every metal that could add to the happiness of mankind. He gave us strong arms, cunning hands and willing hearts. Man accepted the gift and before his BturdV blows forests were felled; in their place sprang up cities with golden spires and smoking chim neys that pierced the blue above. Fertile fields yielded their bounti ful store of goldea grain. The iron horse, shaking the ground beneath and outstripping the wind above, carries its load of human freight and delivers its precious stores in distant cities, bringing back the nroducts of the artisan and the w factory. Over the earth are stretch cd a net-work of wires on which messages are borne on lightning's win?. All these are the gifts of God and the products of man's labor. God sends refreshing show ers and the beautiful sunshine and coaxes mother earth to yield her bountiful store. Soft, winds kiss the beautiful flowers whose myr iads of colors please the eye and gladden the heart. But amidst al this plenty and beauty there much sadness. "Man's inhumanity to man makes countless thousand mourn." The rich have seized the land. The poor have no home. The flowers do not bloom for them, j The beautiful places which theyj build with their own hands afford them no shelter. The song of the babbling brook is hollow mockery. Of the bountiful harvest they get a mere sustenance, and many beg that. The laws protect the rich and allow them to rob the poor. Each day the rich are growing richer, and the poor poorer. Usury and extortion are sapping the in dustries of the nation. What fond memories are connected with the word home. ''There's no place like home." There a man's patriotism is anchored. There, in the atmos phere of its wholesome influence, his whole being ennobled. , There, in the sweet companionship of wife and children, his character is cast in a finer mould. There he builds him an altar and worships God. There is exerted the kind of influ ence of mother that will be carried over the golden wires of memory, in years to come, to guide the erring ones when they reach manhood. 0, home! Around thy sacred altar are clustered in golden ebeaves the sweetest memories of childhood, Looking back through the varying . scenes of fleeting years we behold the sweet smile of mother, the kind earess of father and loving confi- ' dence of sister or brother. O, home! In tby sacred precincts were formed ties of love that will never go out in life. How cruel to be robbed of home! How great the nation's sin that permits it! God pity those who have no home! Ex. Opinions differ. Iiv Boston, his prediction that no matter whether McKinley or Hryan wins the-stock markets will fall, is not considered seriously. When leading men of State 6treet were seen, the remark invariably was: "Oh, Keene is a speculator, and everybody knows his methods." But St. Louis" financiers, on the other hand, agree with Keene In his statement that business pros pects are not bright, that over capitalization is a menace to the country, and that a small band of monopolists are crushing the peo ple.. A dispatch to the Herald says not a single banker could be found who was willing to take issue with Mr. Keene, although some thought he had overrated the dan ger somewhat. , T. A.. Stoddard, manager of the St. Louis clearing bouse, and one of the best posted financiers in the city, said: ,. .. "Mr. Keene hit the nail on the head exactly but I can see no good to be accomplished by announcing such things to the world. Prices of nearly all securities have been boosted to a fictitious level, but they should be allowed to gradual ly settle down to their proper basis." W. H. Thompson, F. E. Marshall, John Nickerson, W. H. Lee and other bankers expressed them selves in a similar manner, but re fused to make statements. Spo kane Review. For Sal. Tie' assassination of King Hum bert of Italy was one of the most dastardly crimes of the century, The assassination was inspired by the spirit of anarchy, which seeks the death of all rulers and the overthrow of all governments. How to prevent the spread of the anarchistic spirit and stamp out that now in existence will be one of the problems of the twentieth cen tury. While assassins should be punished without doubt, yet the old saying that "prevention is bet ter than cure" will probably be found to apply here, as well as in many other directions. Mild,equit-' able government, with the rights of the poor as safely guarded as those of the rich, an absence of the mili tary spirit, a recognition of the principle that governments derive their just powers irom tne consent of the governed, will do more to prevent the masses from following the teachings ot anarchists tnan any number of repressive measures.
