The work of "delimiting the provisional boundary tn the disputed Alaska-Canadian territory having been completed in that part crossing the Dalton trail and touching the Porcupine district, the Americans in the district find that they have lost a large part of what they Iwlieved was rightfully American territory. The survey has been run and the monuments set within the last few weeks by O. H. Tittinan, of Washington, D. C, and W. F. King, of Ottawa, and assistant, who have simply followed instructions as set forth in the modus vivendi agreed to provisionally some months ago by Sec retary Hay, on the part of the United States, and the British representatives, after the adjournment ot the joint high commission. The survey and detnarkation of the line leaves nearly one-half ot the Por cupine gold mines in the British terri tory, and it has been the general opin ion for a long time that the mines in fact, the entire Porcupine district was on the American side. Math ot the Dalton toll road leading to Porcu pine city now lies within Canadian ter ritory also; that is, ia on the Canadian side of the iron monuments set on the provisional line. The American miners in the Porcu pine having watched the development of the work of delimiting and marking the boundary, were so aroused over the result of so much miuing district being left on the Britsh Bide that they were not long in addressing a protest to President McKinley. Copies of the protest have been sent to the chambers of commerce of Seattle, Skagway, San Francisco and Portland, with a request for co-operation. The commission will be in the vicin ity ef Skagway a month, delimiting the provisional line on White Pass and Cbilkoot Pass. The Porcupine placet mines, it is estimated, will yield 250, 000 this year. Work of sluicing, by dranlicking and other kinds of mining is carried on in the district. . Plaror Mine Excitement. Jnnean has a full fledged placer mine excitement, according to advices brought from the north by the steamer Bosalie. When the vessel sailed from the north Jnly 18, a stampede was on to a new placer diggings on Glacier bay, about 150 miles distant. Some donbt existed as to the placers really being new discoveries. 'ot a few believe them to be the diggings found and oper ated many yeara ago by the Russians. In any event the finds are most promis ing. It is claimed for then that an experienced miner can make consider- bly more than wages, rslly 200 peo ple, it ia estimated, had gene from Jn nean alone to the scene ot the new ois- coveries. The bars in tne mourn oi Glacier bay all are said to contain gold. Advices From Nome. Advices from Nome received by the Alaska Commercial Company at au Francisco state that up to July 10 there had been 19 cases ot smallpox in the camp, only one being reported since July 5. St. Michael has established a strict quarantine against Nome. According to the records ol the cus tom-house, 114 vessels have entered Nome and 13,437 passengers have land ed, not including those who cam? down the Yukon river, nor those who lauded from vessels which did not report to the customs officers. ' It is estimated that from 6,000 to 10,000 persons will winter at Nome. Idl Mines Picking tjp. The Phoenix mine in Greenwood Gulch, one-half mile above the Golden Eagle, and opposite the Don Joan, near Sumpter, Or., is being operated by C Chatham and William Banders, who have a two years' lease from the own ers, C. M. Berry, D. L. Cboate, L. M. Barnett and C. M. Collier. The -nine has been idle for nearly four years, and the K-stamp mill and concentrator put in liV O. B. Hardy are wreck. The mill was run only a short time, owing to bad management, and, though the property could have been sold for f 75,- 000, it was allowed to stand idle, the owners failing to agree on the method of operating. There Is several hundred feet of tunnels, but these will not be used, the new operators preferring to sink and follow the ore. The ore is ol two grades, one carrying' black oxide ot coDoer and the other running well in free gold. ' Rattlesnake" Jones is the name ol a Boise man who engages in capturing the reptiles and selling them to the Chinese. The Celestials take each rat tler and put it into bottle of w hisky and let it stand for two years. What remains of the snake is then removed and the balance is let stand until it clarifies, which process requires five years. The liquid is then sovereign cure for rheumatism, says the Boise Statesman. The Chinese claim that it ill cure the most violent case. It takes seven years in all to make the preparation ready for use. Horthweat Motas. WBOR STRIKES OF HISTORY. tarty Kavutlaa Laorra Were the Kirat to Inaugural Tbeoa. It is often asserted tbst the lubor itrike as such does not duts back fur ther than Capt. Boycon, lu the early part of the century. As a matter ot fact tbe earliest strike dales back to tbout 1450 B. C, or upward of thirty three centuries ago. Pharaoh was building a new temple of Thebes. Tbe masons received very little cash, but a quantity of provlslous, which the con tractors thought sufficient, was uauded to them on the first of each month. Sufficient or not, they mostly ate It be fore the time had elapsed. On one oc casion many of them had nothing left quite early In the , month, so they marched to the contractor's house, be fore which they squatted and refused to budge until justice was done. The contractor persuaded them to lay their distress before Pharaoh, who was tbout to visit the works, and he gave them a handsome supply of corn, and io all went well for that month. But the same state of things recurred by the middle of tho next and for some iays tbe men struck work. Various inferences took place, but the men declined to do a stroke until they were riven another supply of food. They aeclared the clerks cheated them, used false weights and so forth, familiar enough complaints In this country un der the truck systenn. The contractor not complying with their demands, they marched to the governor of the city to lay their grievances before him, nd he tried to get them to return to work by smooth words, but that was do use and they Insisted on having food. At last, to get rid of thetn. he drew up an order for corn on the public granary and tbe strike was at an eud. Colller's Weekly. School fur Parts Cabbies. It Is what the t reach call accldenteln one place Out aud mavadamlsud, elsewhere gently sloping upward, or falling In abrupt descent; here paved with wood, and there with stones, while a little further on the road Is "up." and sand heaps, loose bricks and broken glass threaten the tyro and the the. Tbe wayfarers who are dotted along the route must be "humored aud not druv." Fortunately, they are not flesh and blood. They are merely metal dummies propped up by a stick from behind and ready to fall st a touch. Each figure presents the familiar personalities of tbe Paris streets bourgeois, soldiers, scorchers. Tommy playing marbles, and tbe cur that goes for every wheel. There also are nurse, baby and go-cart The cast Iron baby shows complete Indifference, which also Is true to life. Tbe track of Aubervllllers Is nothing If not realistic. -rail Mall Gazette. Banister and Solicitor. Lawyers In Englaud are divided Into two great classes counsellors or bar risters, and attorneys or solicitors, Tbe counsellors or barristers, as these terms Imply, confine themselves to the actual trial and argument of cases In open court, and to consultations with attor neys or solicitors who represent the clients. It Is contrary to professional etiquette for a barrister to confer or consult directly with bis client The attorneys, or solicitors, as they are all now styled, see tbe client take his statement gather tbe facts, and put It all down In writing In what la called "the brief." The brief Is then handed by the solicitor to the barrister, with his retaining fee, and thereupon tbe barrister and solicitor confer; the bar rister gives bis advice and opinion, and If tbe case goes to trial he does all the work In court, such as examining and cross-examining witnesses, and argu Ing or summing np the case before the court or jury. Tbe solicitor does not speak In court at all. Clay Image Are Worshiped. Tbe effete religious systems and Idol atrous practices of China represent an annual expenditure of $400,000,000, There are 4,000,000 deities, 300,000 tern pies. Some temples are served by hnndred priests. These men are Illiter ate, and often from tbe very scum of society. About 70,000 pigs, rabbits, sheep and deer, and 27,000 pieces of costly silk are annually offered at tbe sacrifices. Tbey worship clay images or men, dogs, turtles, snskes, lizards and In sects. Tbe people live In dread of evil spirits, which are supposed to cause disease and calamity. They propitiate tbe evil spirits rather then pray to ths good, having a belief In tbe cruelty aud beartlessness of the gods. Oldest Manufacturing Industry. Tbe oldest manufacturing luduxtry In Great Britain Is that of flints and flint locks, which has been carried on sloes the beginning of the fifteenth century, If not farther back still, at tbe Ling beath mines, Brandon, on tbe borderi of Norfolk and Suffolk. The flints art all made by band, being placed on ths operator's knee and chipped with hammer to tbe proper shape. Of course, a number of these flints an nsed for fire-making, being principally used In countries like Spain and Italy, where the duties on ordinary matchei and wax matches are to high as to con vert them into luxuries. On the Wane. Ilorte racing In Russia Is on tbs wane now that the reindeer has been Introduced as the rival of the horse, The reindeer Is among tbe swiftest of quadrupeds, and can outstrip the swiftest of horses. It Is eMtlmated that he could give the fleetest Derby win ner a start of half a mile and beut him easily over the Derby race track. Snowstorm Started Fire. A snowstorm started a fire on tbe premises of a farmer living at Ilcbu terne, Belgium. He placed a quantity of quicklime near a sited on a farm and left It there all night. In tbe course of the nlgbt snow fell onto tbe lime and tbe heat thus developed became so great that It set tbe tbed on tire, com pletely destroying It and Its contents, A superstitious Individual saya It 1 a bad sign to write another man's muni m a aote.
