A WARM ESSAY, In a little country school not far from this city, literary exercises are held regularly every Friday afternoon during the term. A twelve-y ear-old boy read an origi nal essay on ''The Jvwspaper." This latter-day youthful Solomon treats hie subject thuely: v "Newspapers are sheets of paper on which stuff to- read is printed. . The men look over the paper to see if their names "j in it and the . women use it to put on shelves and sich. I don't know how news papers came into the world. I don't think God does. The Bible says nothing about editors and I never heard of one being in heaven. I guess the editor is the missing link them fellers talk about. The first editor I ever heard of was the one that wrote up the flood. He has been here ever since. "Some editors belong to the cbureh and some try to raise whis kers. All of them raist hell in their neighborhoods and all of 'em are liars, at least all I know and I only know one. , Editors never die. At least I never saw a dead one. Sometimes the paper dies and then the people feel glad but some one starts it up again. Editors never went to school because editors nev er got licked. Our paper is a mighty poor one but we take it so , iu can uaeiton our pantry shelves. Our editor don't amount to much but paw says he had a poor chance when he was a boy. He goes with out under clothes in winter, wears no socks and has a wife to support him. Taw hasn't paid his sub scription in five years and don't intend to." Princeton Record. moot;:, by the purifying effects of fire than to think of the slow pro cess of decay, lasting for years, through wh:ch the body must pass after . burial. The objections to cremation are' mostly based on predjudiee but this, like other rel ies of an ago outgrown, must soon give way before the oard march of a higher civilization. ... THE STATE FAIR. The'State Board of Agriculture is making a great effort this year to make the state fair a representative agricultural and live stock show. The premium list is out and is be ing thoroughly distributed through out the state and personal efforts are being made to attract the atten tion of farmers and stockmen to -. the very liberal premiums. Several counties in the state are Jrepaijnga county exhibit for the fair, for they realize it will be a good opportunity to advertise their county in a most practical way. Each exhibit will be a lecture room, and an object lesson to the liouie seeker, where he can get in orutatjon, along intelligent lines, and will be worth many dollars in advertising the county's resources. Theliire stock show will be, without question, the best ever held on the coast Breeders all over the country Are preparing to exhib- , it at the fairthia year. Thereisan opportunity hire in Oregon for the farmers who have been running in debt raisirg wheat, to turn their attention to the profitable produc tion of beef, mutton or pork or en gage in dairying which haaalready taken itsplaee as a leading, paying industry in this state. . There is a demand for the best specimens of, fdl breeds, which will continue to ', grow for years to eonie, and there1 in nothing that will encourage these industries so tnuz-h as stock shows at state and omit v fair. We wish to remind the brother that the Arlington National Bank is a very live institution and has never tailed,, bat that its re sources are constantly Increasing. The following from the Walla Walla Statesman should serve as a warning to all wheat growers and thresbermen to exercise extraordinary care against fire this season. On account of the rank growth of all vegetation early in the season danger from fire is much greater tbaa in former year: "Sparks Iroui a traction engine on the farm of John 8preitzer in Spring Valley started a fire in his wheatfield which was not extinguished until ' over 600 acres had been destroyed. Wheat in one place had ben threshed and the outfit was being moved to another field, when crossing a flat stretch of ground sparks from the engine dropped into the straw, and almost before the men had time to attempt to check it, it had gain ed great headway and spread with re markable rapidity. Mr, ffprekzer loet about 200 acres, Willis ngels the same amount and Dan McCoehuin a large amount. Mr. 8preit2er'igraiD was in sured, biit it understood the balance burned np was not. "Straw is unusually heavy and thick this year, and lieing quite dry, it is a difficult matter to extinguish a tire when once started. Up to date there has been as many as 15 tiies in different whoatflelds, causing an aggregate loss of 1000 acres of gram." ' H. W. HARTMAN. Carpenter and Builder. Scroll Uork; a Specialty.
