The wyial suffrage amendment aiioulA carry at the eWlioii next Monday. It phould carry becaiuMr it is just and right; because ike women of Oregon are irttelligwut, r ntriolic and sensible -a class of citizens in whose liai)ds the ballot would be wielded for the public Who will nay that an American lorn Chinaman, with his queue and it heathenism, hi ignorance and liis idolatry, is better qualified to itike part in the affairs of govern luent than an intelligent, educated, if fined Aiuwican woman? t Who v ill say i hat tbe hordes of ignorant, neiui-civilizedeuiigranta who throng our shores from the countries of Southern Europe are more desir able as American voting sovereigns than are the wives and mothers and daughters of fair Oregon? Yet this is what the men of Oregon will nay in effect it the amendment is defeated next Monday.--A hard fight is being made against the amendment by the po litical ringsters of the western part of the state for the simple reason that these gentlemen (?), who are in politics tor revenue only, know that with the ballot in the hands of the intelligent, earnest, conscien tious women of Oregon, an element will have entered into state politics which can be neither bought, bar tered nor bull-dozed, and which will ultimately force these political trimmers and grafters to Beek new J0D8. . ' . ... This element, however, even though backed and championed by tbe great Oregoman newspaper, will not be able to defeat the amendment If it is defeated it will be done by a class of voters who are good citizens, earnest, pa triotic men, whose conservatism makes them shrink from any new departure in matters political. These men have tbe highest regard for woman. They ascribe to her all the attributes which go to make up a nearly perfect being. They reverence her purity, respect her intelligence, admire her tact and worship her womanliness. They seek her advice and yield to her judgment even in things political sometimes but in spite of it all' they are afraid to let her vote. They are afraid the great structure known as American politics which they have helped to build will pollute her. They are afraid it would not be quite the proper thing and they say as a last resort that they are afraid she don t want to vote and wouldn't if she could. Men of OregoOjlet us give her the chance. . Let us say to tbe world that we believe our wives and daughters and mothers are better qualified to cast a ballot than is a pig-tail Chinaman, even though he ttas born in Oregon. Let us not be a stone in the way of the wheels of progress. The political emanci nation of woman is coming ; it is one of the steps in the path of social evolution and we can't stop it. We may hinder it but we cant stop it, for it's coming and it's almost here. vote for the amendment Every voter m Gilliam county, who has the welfare of the county at heart, should cast his ballot for V. G. Cozad, for joint senator of this district. Mr. Cozad is an able attorney of Canyon City and it is known that, in the event of bis election, the interests of Gilliam county will be safe in hia hands. lie will not discriminate against Gilliam but will treat all sections . of the district with justice and fair- negs. , W. L. Wilcox is the man for the people when it comes to sheriffs office. His popularity is due to the fact that he has always been cour teous and obliging as an official and has ever regarded his office as a public trust. He has always stood for the best interests of the taxpayers of the county and for that reason a big majority of them will cast their ballots for him next Monday, When vou go to the polls next Monday don't forget that one of the most important offices in tbe county is that of school superinten dent, and when you reach the name of W. II. Xeal on your ballot, then make your mark. Mr. Neal is one of tbe most thorough educators in the country and is highly qualified for this office. Vote for biru. . "It ii with a good deaf of plessur nd satisfaction that I recommend Chant trlahi' Colic, Cholera, and Diarrhoea Keinedy," says Druggist A, W. Kawtelle of Hartford, Conn, "A Isdy cufomer, Heing the remedy exposed forsalenn my show esse, said to me: 'I really believe ' that medicin saved my life the (mat summer while at the shore and she be came to enthusiastic over its merits that I at once made np my mi mi to recom mend it in the future. Rintly a gen tleman came into my store so overcome with colic pains that lie rank at otu-e to th floor. I gave him a do of this re medy whicii helped blm, I reptdth dose and in fifteen minute he left my store as well as ever." 8old bv The Hu'lwn riiririruiry-C. V. Croxfirlil, tur. Democratic Ticket.. IxEKTLKMEXt ' lu justice to myself I wish to correct some of the reports concerning the as sessment of S. B. Barker. First: 1 wish lo state that 8. B. Barker is tbe second largest individual taxpayer in Uilliatu countv. J. W. Smith alone payiug a larger lax. The tax roll of 1S99 for this county shows that Mr. Barker pays $486.71 as bis individual tax; Barker tiros, tax amounts to (128.41; Barker A Cameron pat 1165.40 Mr. Barker oavinB one-bait of these, or $141.90, making a tout of $627.61 paid by toiiu as shown by tbe last assessment roll. Farther: 1 will say that me ron is in the court boas and can be examined by anyone. itespecuniiy suonmww, M. O. Clabxk. Condon, Or., May 28, 1900. Notice. The nndersiened members of tbe conn' tv court berebv notify tbose concerned tbat on July 10th. 1894. tbe following order was made by tbe county court, to wit: " In tbe matter of collection ot school district and city taxes and payment for same. fow. on this day tt was consider ed and Ordered tbe county treasurer be instructed to retain 5 percent of moneys collected and paid in by tbe sheriff for school districts and cities; eaia cnarges are made to cover expense connected with making assessments and collections for the resDecUve distneu ana cities." That, in accordance with said order, tbe treasurer has retained the 5 per cent for assessment and collection referred to and bas accounted to the county for all of it by crediting from time to time for the seeral amounts to Mia "county fond." In this connection we will also state the fact tbat the county lost noth ing by reason of tbe failure of th'e First National Bank ot Arlington, either in the shape of money or iutereiit, because the county treasurer treated the whole matter as a personal loss did not mix the county up in the business but tiui ply called in warrants and met all other demand on htm as treasurer, toe same as if he had lost no tnouey by the failure, This prompt action on the part of the treasurer not unly fully protected tbe county and his bondsmen, but prevented any inconvenience to either. The above statements are not mad by guess. The county court frequently checks over the treasurer's nooks, using a cross cnecx system, which include the sherifT and clerk's accounts. That is well calculated Is detect irregularities and errors. Tbe foregoing is published at the a neat of 8. B. Barker, county treasurer, ho savs b thinks tbe court should make known the facts as an offset to cer tain tslse reports, now being circulated. in view of tit having in th past co operated with, and endeavored to carry out the order of the conrt. I notice an inquiry in relation to th deputy hire of certain county officers and have an xiously awaited an answer in your last issue. It appear to the. writer that it won Id have been an easy matter for the same to have been answered and that their failure to reply to the same in any way admit tbe fact tbat the resolution passed by tbe republican county conven tion mean deputy liire for republican officers in case of their election. Would it not be well, under the circumstances, for the voter and taxpayer to remem ber that neither the democratic nominee for comity clerk or county sheriff is ask in for deputy fair in the event of elec tion and that each of them are capable and competent men.
