Watch Local Column for Pule, The little colony of New Zealand n.v.ty d own in the South Pacific ocean is attracting some attention in the big outside world at present on account of some rather advanc d conditions under which the peo I le there live. - The colony com prises about 101.U00 square miles f territory iu.d has a population of bt.t K)M,X0 souU. described as beina more prosperous lhan any other people on the globe and the reason given is thatcer fi'n be ifi.-iil liws have bean pass ed during;; the. last few years that insure a greater degree of justice to every citizen than do the the laws f any other country. Within the last ten years the people have pass ed a srradnnied land tax, a gradu- nted income lax and numerous laws regulating, the employment of labor. The government built, (i vns and operates its own railway, telephone and telegraph lines and is said to give better service, at greatly reduced rates and to pay butter wages to employes for short er hours than do similar enterpris es, owned by private capital, in any oMi'r part of the world. The railroads in that country carry passengers SO miles for 10 cents freight rates are proportionately low and yet the 1000 miles of rail roads "in that country net an annual profit of over 2,000,UOO. . The government also conducts the ex press business. Pos tal savings banks are in successful operation and the government has also lately embarked in the life in surance business Giving perfectly raftf insurance at much lower rates than is charged by private compa nies. Woman sufl'erage prevails and the women are said to take as much interest in the affairs of gov ernment as the. men do. A com pulsory system of education pre vails and "the railroads carry all children to and from school free. . New Zealand has no millioniares, no trusts (except those owned by the government) no tramps and no strikes. Her exports amount to about .$4" per capita per year while those of the United fetates amount to but li I the mrmc of the 8-ntc of Oregon, you ere Iwwhy notified ami reqitlrvd tor.riirt u wer the' e emittut Mod itt you In the Hoove entitled unit, on or before Thursday, April a, WOO, the nmc being eiJt weefai from the dnte of the first publication of thU uotice, end thut If you full U so piir end answer the wild com pUInt or otherwise plead thereto within Mid ime. the pl:ilntiir will apply to the Court for the relief therein prayed for, whleh h for decree forever diawilvintt the bonds of matrimony ex isting between tiie plaintiff end defendant In the above entitled a.ilt, end for snch other eud further relief a may In equity be J tut.
