the gq::do:i globe THURSDAY. JANUARY 25, I BOO, THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY, OREGON. .... DEPUTY HIRE. Eighteen montha ago, when the the county court -jwssed an order atlowiug deputy hire iu the clerk's and sheriff's otlices, this paper took the position that the action was a wUe one, believing there was ample work to be done to earn every dollar of compensation pro vided for under that order. Since that time there has been a division of the county, and at the latest session of the county court this or der was revoked to take effect July 1st. While the Globe believes that the members of the court made this order in compliance with a demand of a large number of the people, this paper, after making some investigations as to the amount of work now being done in the clerk's office, is still of the opinion that the compensation now allowed is not exorbitant and that a reduction in the pay will either tend to lower the standard of the work in that office and there . by jeopardize the best interests of the people, or work an injustice on the man, whoever he may be, whom the people choose, at the next elec tion, to take charge of the office in in July. In taking this position the Globe realizes that it is espousing a cause which, at the present time is an Kpular, but it also believes that j much of the antagonism to the al lowance of deputy hire is due to a belief that the work of the office has been almost cut in half by the division of the county. While itis true that we have lost considerable of our territory it is also true that what remains is rapidly filling np aid being developed thereby keep ing the amount of business to be done for the couuty up to if not above what it was when our terri tory was larger and our popula tion was less dense. It should al so be noted that almost every ses tion of the legislature adds to the work of the clerk. The scalp boun ty law and the registration law, especially the latter, have created a large amount of work for that office. The Globe hag no axe to grind in this matter other than to advo cate what it believes to be for the best interests of Gilliam county. We are as much opposed to politi cal jobberry or robbery of the peo ple by office holders as any citizen, but we are also opposed to the public demanding its work done for less than it is worth. THE FLOURING MILL. Another letter has been received from H. E. Trunible, of Lincoln, Neb., who, as stated in this column a few weeks ago, represents parties who own a $15,000 flouring mill plant which they wish to move to some good town in the Oregon wheat belt Mr. Trunible states in this letter that the mill has a capacity of 150 barrels per day and he asks what the town will do in the way of a bonus to help pay the expens es of moving the mill and setting it up at this place. Mr. Trumble has been advised of the location of this town, distance from R. R., cost of fuel etc. and his inquiries seem to indicate that be means business. The letter has been turned over to Mayor Dunn for reply and we hope to see our citizens take an interest in this matter and see jost what can be done. Condon should have a mill. Why not try to secure this one. The article on Gilliam county, which was written for the New Year's issue of the Oregonian by the editor of this paper, is bringing inquiries right along in regard to the resources of this county. The writers generally want to know about our public lands and the op portunities for acquiring homes here and other information of like character. All these inquiries are answered to the best of our ability but such could no doubt be done better if the town had some sort of an organization to attend to such matters. There is room in this section of Gilliam county for twice as many people as are now here and it would be dollars in every Condon business man's pocket if it was fully settled up with as good a class of people as are now here. The work can not be done though without co-operation and. if we would coot-raff wo mud organize. MAY VI LLC About an Inch of snow Ml MnUy rilglit mid at this writing 4t ia still snow l'ir. . Arlington voted a 10-miII special school tax last week indicating that they expect to have a good school next term. Nothing speaks better for a town than its schools. The first thing a stranger asks when he comes to your town is What kind of school have you?" The wheat is almost ready to joint so the farmers say and if we have no freea ing weather to kill it, the harvest will be earlier than usual and from all Indi cations will be the heaviest for years. A ball was given at the Wade hall at Olex and a very -enjoyable time is re ported. Political Complexion. As the time for primaries, conventions and election draws near there seems to be considerable interest shown by mem hers of all the parties as to what the po litical complexion of the county is likely to be next June. There have been some radical changes in this county since last election. We have lost three entire pre cincts and parts of three others by the division of the county while the popula tion of the remaining precincts has been increased by immigration to a nnmber which will perhapa equal that lost by the erection of Wheeler eouoty," Wheth er these changes in population will cause any changesin election returns re mains to be seen and in order to give the politicians something to put in their spare time considering we give below the returns of the last election for the offices of governor, secretary of state, and justice of the supreme court, on the state ticket, and also the vote for the different county officers.
