ri-HJHSOAY. JANUARY II. lOOl. Tilii OFFICIAL PAPER OF CiLLtAM COUNTY, OStOON. ; ISIG.'tN is II 7i5TAW J&.V. S!',n ;:!i;, , cutting, yvt iMivered li.it i mt cause, arc the following Wi.fil.- (lltfcoil trMii the lips of Miss A.l;i Roberts, .ln.ightrr ofB. II, Uob- cr!a, aiiinst tlio gfntk'iiten (?) of our national capital for the tlis griicffnl, ungenerous and unkind remarks cinnnating from tlwir foul ftiul besmirched lips. Yet we doubt if their finer feelings are susceptible to such retribution, for in their dense ignoranc they know no bet ter than they do, and therefore are incapable of being "cut," but cer tainly such words would sting a Westerner. Here is what she says: During my short stay in Washing ton I have been extremely einbar- ' Hissed several times. Time and again I have overheard the rudest remarks concerning myself and my father. . In elevators, in the corri dors of the capitol, on the public streets, I have been made the sub ject of open comment, as if I were an object of exhibition. ""otlhe slightest restraint seems to govern these people that their audible remark might" be distaste ful to me. Ou the contrary, I know that on several occasions the rude people who indulged in these spite ful sayings were highly gratified by reason of the fact that I heard and understood the significance of their jests. Contrasting ibe East and the West I have this to-say; that were I at home, were I among the men of the West, not even the bitterest en emy of my father, or of our cause, would permit me to be so persecut ed. Men of the -style and fashion of the East do not flourish in the West. There in a vigorous man hood there, which would not 6toop to hurt a woman's feelings. "I am certainly surprised at my . l. - r-. t. different to nie as a foreign country. The indecency of eastern people with whom I have come in contact is beyond description. It tran scends all legitimate curiosity. I might go up and down the west alone, unprotected and in com munities absolutely hostile to my father and myself and never be subject to such annoyance and in sult. v.; uur civilization lscenaimy uiuer ent. A woman is something fur more sacred in my country than here. If such little pettiness ehould occur, there are big, strong men out there who would so im press the lesson on the offenders that they would remember not to offend again, even if they were so dense and ignorant that they did not understand the indecency of their offenses. Death of Father Briody. An aged priests named Thomas Brio dy, Htcpplng at the Home for the Aged, on East Twentieth and East Irving streets, fell dead while quietly walking along the sidewalk near the Home yes terday evening. His death was not nn expected, as he has been afflicted for several years and quite seriously of late. Father Briody as several years ago lo cated in the diocese of New Orleans, w here he suffered from a severe altack of yellow fever. He never fully recoved. From that time until his deulh he waf never able to perform the full function? of hisollioe, and received lighter charg es adapted' to his sadly dimisiied strength. Four years ago he came to the Oregon diocese. For a period he was stiitloned down in Coos county, but two weeks ago he became so ill that I.e was removed to the Home, where the kindest attention was given him. 'While he at times showed eiyns of returning strength, it was apparent to physicians that bis days were not triany. Death came while taking a little exercise near the home, and was quite sodden The funeral will 'take place from the catbe drul Thursday, the services being held at A. M. The remains will be buried in Mount Calvary cfnietery. Oregonian. Father Rriody was for a time in charge of the Catholic churches here and et Fossil. Ho left here for Tillamook in '98. ROCK CREEK. .
