THA NKSGIVING THO UG1ITS, Thanksgiving ,''.I)ny has conioto bo rw.ogiied a the leading Aaier tesin holiday. It is one of the good old institutions branded by the 11 1 j grim F&lbera, at Plymouth, and handed down to us through almost three centuries of time. The day was first observed in the year 1021, one year after the landing of . the Mayflower, and was often repeated during that and the ensuing cen tury. It soon became customary for the governors of the different colonies to appoint, each year, a Jay of fasting in the spring and a day of thanksg:ving in the fall. Both institutions were, to begiu with, rather severely ecclesiastical in their nature the "fast" day be ing, a continual round of prayer and sermons, beginning before breakfast and lasting uutil bed time with but little if any interval for eating, while the "thanksgiving" day was very similar except that it was accompanied by the best dinner the Puritan house-wives knew how to prepare. Doth dayB continued in favor for a century or two but with the evolution of the modern politician, patriot and churchman all of whom know a good thing when they see it, and none of whom are verdaut enough to observe a "fast" day so long as they have the price of a meal that institution was allowed to lapse into "innocuous desuetude," while Thiakiivin,; D.iy, after ba ing properly pruned of its princi pal puritanisnis, grew in popular favor at a rate which seems to have closely paralleled the evolution of high grade roast turke3'-with-cran-berry-eauce and mince and pump kin pie. While Thanksgiving Day is officially and theoretically a relig ious festival there are as many different ways of spending the day as there are different classes and conditions of people and no man says to his neighbor "nay" so long as each and the other keep within the limits of the law in their man ner of giving thanks. One inter esting feature of the observance of the day is that so many people cel ebrate it in a manner so entirely at variance with their usual man ner of living. Many hardened old sinners, who never think of enter ing a church on any other occasion, are quite regular in their attend ance on Thanksgiving Day, while mmy staid and sober citizens, on all other occasions, often tarry too long over their Thanksgiving Tom and Jerry and take on a joggling jag. Even the preachers often get out of the rut on that occasion and . many mediocre men treat their hearers to dazzling discourses on that day that would not discredit a Demosthenes. The writer remem bers a Pennsylvania- parson 'who used to stick to straight theology the year around, and always par- riei plitics, bat 0:1 Thanksgiving Day he'd turn loosehe torrents of his eloquence and give the demo crats a most terrific drubbing, he'd make his democratic members tremble in their powsand, of course, cause his republican adherents to fairly jump for joy. Thanksgiving Day. is all right. It is a social festival; a day of fam ily reunions and friendly inter course around the festal board. It is distinctively an American holiday and for that reason more than any other it should be popu lar among Americans. Let us return thanks. ,1'lease pass the turkey. A COMEDY OF ERRORS. The American people are quick to set up a popular idol, transform a prominent man into a tin god, indulge in hero worship and all that sort of thing, but are just as quick to pull down the idol, hiss the hero and turn the tin gjI top- sy turvy if things don't go to suit them. A case in point is the recent "hullabaloo" about the Dewey home. It has been a comedy of errors all around. " The people blundered when they gave a home to a uiuq who didn't needit. Bet ter have given it to tho Red Cross or some like institution which would devote it to the comfort of aged and disabled sailors who uianned the ships and fired the guns that wadegreat heros famous, The admiral blundered when he accepted such a gift from people he dida't kujw und again when he pare the gift to his wife. Next Mrs. IKnvey blundered when she gave the troublesome bit of realty to young Ceorgs Dewey whose only claim to distinctoti is the rather phenomenal foresight he displayed in choosing George Dewey sr. for his father so many years in ad vance of the battle of Manila bay. Yes it's been a comedy of errors all around and during the per- formance the big bouqnet, intended for the "etar" was tossed aside to a n ordinary "super" in the wing Kev. .Sam Jones must have made one convert with his famous? speech against the public school system, delivered at the Oregon City Chautaqua meet last summer. A recent editorial in the Oregonian denounces the public school system as being "the socialistic principle in its most dangerous form" and that it will "bankrupt society mor ally, industrially and financially." The next thing we know Uncle Harvey will be after the post office department with a 6harp stick and the demand that it be turned over to the express compa nies or the railroad pool. The action of the government in buying its own bonds to "relieve a money stringency on Wall street" was a good thing for Wall street. Now if the government will send an agent to Eastern Oregon with cash to buy a few million bushels of wheat, at a living price to "re lieve the money stringency"among the farmers it would be a good thing for the farmers. Failure of the government to act on this sug gestion may lead some farmers to believe that in the eyes of the gov ernment one Wall street stock jobber is worth a whole field full of fool farmers who spend their time raising 36 cent wheat. And now the story goes that Ad miral Dewey was led to transfer the gift house to his wife because of a certain blooming Indiana wid ow who is about to bring an action against him for br each of promise of marriage. Had Dewt read his Dickens well and pondered .over the advice of old Tony Weller to his son Sam, "Samivel Samivel be vare of vidders" he might not now be in this unpleasant predicament with the Indiana widow; but come to think of it, neither would he be the happy husband of the lady who was but recenntly the charm ing "Vidder" Haen. "And nov the secret is out why Admiral Dewey refuses to be a can didate for president," says the Times-Mountaineer. "He has been mixed up in J love affairs and a breach of pronlse suit is threaten ed. The other day he deeded the house in Washington, presented to him by the people, to his wife, and this caused considerable comment and some severe criticism. A Wash ington dispatch lets the secret out that the admiral feared the home would be attached to secure pay merit of possible damages that might be secured by the pretty In diana widow, with whose affections he is alleged to have trifled.' The name of this fair one is at present withheld from the public, but that she intends to bring an action for damage against the hero of Manila seems quite evident. With a scan dal of that kind on his hands it is little wonder the admiral did not desire to enter politics." "Ohio has a law which compels candidates for public offices to file with the proper officer a sworn statement of their campaign ex penses. In Jefferson county the gentleman who was elected to the office of land appraiser at the re cent election, has filed a statement to the effect that his entire cam paign expenses consisted of the expenditure of the money necessary to the purchase of six half pints of whiskey, to be used on election day in case the weather was damp," says an eastern exchange. " We wonder what became of all that whiskey in case the weather was dry? There would be no danger of the goods spoiling if it was in Ore gon, no matter what the weather, but we don't know about Ohio. Gov. Roosevelt began an address at a toother's congress a few days ago by saying, f'l am not a moth er." This is the only honor that Teddy has admitted did not prop erly belong to hiui.
