THE COHDOH CL03L TfJTJiVY. OCTOBER 19. 1839. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY. OREGON, Every nierrhiint in Condon is Filling )m shelves with fresh new pmnles for the winter trade which remind us , that a comparison of their prices with those if the cata logues sent out by the big depart ment stores is rather favorable to the home merchant. -'.' The Doers seetu to mean busi rreflju Their "ultimatum" was fol lowed up by active warfare and and they seem to be making them selves quite a nuisance to the Eng lish. When they found England was spoiling for a fight they took the (John) Bull by the horns and went at it. There are plenty of people who have not a drop of Dutch blood in their veins whose sympathies will be with the Boers. It looks to be a one tided struggle however and there is Utile doubt of the final outcome. .Admiral Dewey is not likely to be bamboozled by the politicians If he has any political aspirations ho is keeping, theui to himself. If he finally determines to go into politics he will go in as ho went into the harbor of Manilla. He will just slip in when bisopponents are not expecting him and take possession. . before breakfast. Peo ple's Republic At a special meeting of the stock holders of the Union Pacific Rail road Company held recently at Salt Lake the company's preferred stock was increased $23,000,000 and its common stock $7,718,600 for the purpose of converting at par the outstanding Oregon Short line and Oregon Railroad & Navigation com panies' bonds. From this proceed ing it w j jld appear that it is the in tention of those in control of these properties to wipe out the name and character of both the 0. S. L and 0. R. & N. and write instead U. P. from Omaha to Portland. East Oregonian. ADVANCED VIEWS. "I declare myself a socialist, I be lieve in national paternalism, in governmental ownership of all in dustries. The competitive system of labor is today the curse of the toilers. There is no hope for the betterment of the evil conditions which now exist as a result of the antagonism of capital and labor, save in the establishment of a soci alistic form of government" These words were the keynote of an address delivered the other day to an audience of union work ingmen at Spokane by a special agent of the federal bureau of labor sent there to investigate the Coeur d'Alene riots and other labor difficulties. The speaker was Adel bert 51. Dewey cousin of the admir al, and historan of the Dewey fam ily. His words created a consider able sensation. Speaking of the Coeur d'AIenes, Mr. Dewey said: ' who am one of you, say to you that labor organizations can . not afford to 6tand sponsor for crime". This won applause. The speaker also counseled his hearers to moderation in the use of intoxicants, to the end that they might never while under the influ ence of liquor do aught to bring discredit upon organized labor. lie refused to discuss the report he will make on the Wardoer riot, saying it must be given out through the department first and not from him. The meeting was of representa tives of all labor organizations of Spokane to report to Mr. Dewey data concerning all labor difficul ties there in the past five years. "Do we encounter the trusts?" said a leading hardware merchant in conversation with a Los Ange les Herald reporter the other day. "Well I should say bo. We can't get away from them. They are all around us and we meet them at every turn. The worst of it is that they not only fix the prices we must pay for goods, but they also fix the prices we must sell for. They are making mere agents of the merchants, and they allow so small a margin that merchants can hardly do business on it. The trusts are getting all the advance. "In the matter of nails, the price has gone op more than a hundred percent. Six months ago we could Bell for $1.90 a hundred and make a fair profit; no we have to charge i . i $4.30 and we make very little. A part of this is due to freight rates, however. Six months ngw we could get nails in lots of 300 kegs at 50 cents a hundred pounds; now we get a minimum rate of 71 $ cents a hundred in lots of COO kegs. On a consignment of 400 kegs the rate is ten cents more, and on 800 kegs ten cents above that. The dis crimination is against the small shipper every time. Take the matter of pipe. That is all controlled by the trust. Six months ago we could soil two-inch pipe at 10 Go cents a hundred feet and make a profit of 15 per cent; now we have to pay $21 for a hun dred feet and we make less than 5 per cent. . Mr?. Graham left this morning for Cnrvnllia where she will spend the win ter with tier parents, D. S. Wright, who has been in the Cirur d' Alents all Frjiiimer, went through to Fossil Tuesday to visit his wife. Charlie Haliesobn has his house which stood near the schoolhonse tomled on wagons and will move it bodily to his ranch. Mrs. C. C. Wilson has pn'chased H. Q. Jordan's lease on the Pelmonico res taurant aud will take possession on the 2tth inst. Petition for Liquor License. To tho Honorable Comity Court ol the Stale of Oregon, for the County of Gilliam! W.
