Stephenson received a letter from Frank Springfton Monday, which was written in camp, near the summit of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and which stated that the writer and his family to gether with J. II. Downing and family are all en route to Condon. . They are traveling by team, overland, and are en joying tho trip immonsely. Mr. Sprlng ston told hit fine Trail Fork ranch last fall and wont to California for the bene fit of hi health. Mr. Downing and fam ily have been in the Golden atate for sev eral years. The many friends of both families here, will be glad to know that they have decided to return to Condon to remain permanently which, we under stand, I their intention. The fact that nearly every family that leavet Gilliam county to seek a better locality, comes back again ia a splendid endorsement ol this section of the great northwest. Our school directors have erected a neat belfrv on the achoolhouse and pur chased a new bell which ia very com mendable and wat much needed. Rev. C. II. Clarke, of the M. E. church, delivered bit farewell sermon ast Sunday, hit year being finished. Mr. Clarke gave eminent satisfaction to the people here. We are sorry to lose one of our best fam ilies. Harry Stricklln, one of Gilliam coun ty's best teachers, has commenced a six month term of school in the Maley district. T. G. The Milton Eagle says editorially : "There is no longer any doubt about the portage road being built on the Waahington tide around the dallea of the Columbia, for there it capital be hind the. project that will carry It through. It will commence at Co lumbus and terminate either on the north tide of the river opposite Crater point, or will cross the river to The Dalles. Thut it will be seen that the projected railroad from this city to the Columbia river will give us water com petition to the seaboard. This It a matter that should not be lost sight of by our people.
