We have read the three latest numbers of the Gun and fail to find anything in any of them which would seem to justify either the suppression of the paper or the imprisonment of its editor, and as an humble mem ber of the newspaper fraternity, we enter our protest against this threatened throttling of a forceful writer and a fearless man. Governor Geer issued a procla mation on the 9th. inst declaring the 10th a legal holiday in honor of the returning volunteers. The gov ernor shoold have collared his in spiration quicker or held his peace longer. Such an action looks like a "gallery play" inasmuch as not one-twentieth of the people of the state could be expected to hear of the holiday until it had passed. FREER TRANSPORTATION. Notwithstanding the high freight rates charged by railroad com panies, the upper county, the great wheat growing section of the In land Empire, has thrived in years past. It has developed into a thrif ty, prosperous country under the most unfavorable conditions, for the exorbitant rates exacted for moving the products of the farm to tide water have reduced the pro fits of the producer to the mini mum, yet they have been able to exist and at the same time accu mulate property about them that has made the majority independ ent But what the country would have been, and what the residents would have been able to accomplish " had they been favored by lower rates can only be imagined. aarta r i ne tact tnai ine producers oi the upper country have had too much of their income absorbed in getting their products to mar ket has retarded the growth and development of the Inland Empire and has also cramped business in the places from which it drew its supplies and did its shipping. Had the farmers been able to get their wheat to market for 8 cents a bush ei insteau oi paying u cents, tuey I A J f ' . - 1 A would have been more liberal buy ers, hence would have helped build up the cities on the coast with which they traded. There fore it has been shortsighted on the part of Portland that it has not in the past lent its influence to re move the obstructions to naviga tion on the Columbia, for bad it done bo wheat would have been delivered at Portland from all common points east of Umatilla at $2.50 or $3 a ton. But the adverse influence, or to say the least, lack of interest on the part of Portland toward the producers of the Inland Empire has prevented the river being op ened to free navigation. This con dition will, however, not exist m uch longer. Ere lone the Col umbia will be opened to compara tively free navigation, and the peo ple who for years have been in the grasp of railroad companies will soon have freer transportation fac ilities, and will get their products to market at a reasonable cost. The effect of this will be the de velopment of much agricultural land that isnotnow utilized. It will bring into cultivation thousands of acres that at present are but a barren waste, and counties that are tributary to the Columbia will increase rapidly in population. Trade at all points along the river will be better, and a more prosper ous condition may be expected. Freer transportation and lower rates will do much for the entire upper country. Every thoughtful man, say the Terre Haute Express, whose obser vation of men and things is valuable; every man who has been obliged to rely upon himself for ad vancement, whose aspiration has been high enough and his will, strong enooiib to advance himself; every man who recognizes the lad der by which be climbed, and is not ashamed to acknowledge ne was once at the bottom round, has a good word for the home news paper, the country newspaper, which is the barometer of business and the artery through which it is increased and kept alive. Filipinos' Friend. The recent insurrection is the fruit oi the anarchy which has Ions reign ed in the islands, but the insurgents will have to submit themselves to the law after being accustomed to no law at ail. I believe and affirm, nevertheless that the Philippine queetioo should be verv soortiy solved. "The Filipinos are capable of covering themselves; they have all qualifications for it. It is a Question ot time bat the only way to settle the insurrection and asaare prosperity to tbe archipelago is to concede sell-government to the In habitants. This would be the solution of many questions and wonld satisfy all especially the Filipinos, who believe tnemseivea wormy out and are so. i have never been in favor of violence toward the Filipinos. I should like to see autonomy first conceded and then annesation might be talked aboeL This is my opinion. 1 sboulil like to see violence at once put a stop to.
