The many grassy and forage plants-of the Xortjiwesi, which are lx? main dependent? vt the Aiiry, the wool and the ceA tie-interests of tins country, are now being inves tigated by the United States de partment of agriculture, through the chief of the division, Professor F. iAinson Scribner. Professor Scribner who is under instruct ions fnn Secretary Wilson, has jut returned to Portland from Walla Walla, where there has been located a grass farm for testing the adaptability of various grasses to the climate east of the mountains Mvd for investigating the habit9 of growth of new and untried varieties The grass farm, which is on the . lands of the 0. R. & N. Co., was es tablished in the spring of 1898, by the industrial agent of the company, R. C. Judsorr. Upon the recomendationB of Professor Scrib nr, who visited the grounds last season, the work was turned over to the department of agriculture, mid w now officially under the- di rection of Professor Scribner. The expert merits1 being, made are under the immediate care of A. R Lec&enbr, special agent in the division of agrostology and rep resentative of Professor Scribner, on this coast. Through the efforts of the agri cultural department a number of interesting and very promising varieties of forage plants are cul tivated at Walla Walla.. Promi nent among these are the Turke stan alfalfa, from the dry regions of Western Asia, and Oasis alfalfa, from Northern Africa. These va rieties resemble the common alfal fa of this country, but it is already manifest that the first named is more hardy, and it is believed that the latter will prove suitable for locations where irrigation is impos sible. Smooth brome grass has shown a wonderful vitality, under most trying conditions of poor soil lack of water and extremes of heat and cold, Among those grasses, seed of which can be procured in the markets, this brome, from the steppes of Russia, will withstand theloDge&t and most trying pe riods of drought. A forage plant of much promise and entirely new to agriculture is the Metcalfe bean, procured from the dry mesas of New Mexico, by Professor Scribner.. This bean is making a fine growth at the experi mental station and may prove to be as valuable to the dry regions east of the mountains, as the vel vet bean is to the Gulf states. Particularly striking' because of their vigorous growth and manifest productiveness are 'the native rye and wheat grasses. Among the former are found our best grasses for binding drifting sands, or for very sandy soils, and among the latter are species which grow upon thedrye8t cattle ranges of the inte rior. Slender wheat grass is one of these, and this grass has made excellent showing at the farm, but the wheat buncbgrss is the species of all others the one best suited to conditions of dry soil and climate, It is the''bunchgrass"of the North- west and its re-establishment upon the ranges can doubtless be effected by reseeding under prop er conditions, followed by suitable management in regard to grazing. Another grass of much promise is blue grama. This grass is one of the "buffalo grasses" east of the Rocky mountains and affords much excellent grazing. If it can be successfully introduced upon the ranges of Eastern Oregon it will be a great boon to the stockmen of that region. Its power to resist trampling and drougth gives it special value. Its growth on the farm has baen remarkably success ful. Several hundred varieties of gras sea and forage plants are now grow ing at Walla Walla, but it is pro posed to reduce the number and occupy the space with those spe cies which are believed to be most valuable for restocking the ranges or for the arid regions. The grasses here grown will supply, at least in part, the seed necessary for practi . cally demonstrating their value upon the now depleted cattle rang es ot tne interior country.
