THURSDAY. Autfuat 10, 1890. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF QILL1AM COUNTY, OREGON. OX THE FENCE. The Oregonian adults that, at the pri-eeii! writing, it is occupying a position on the top rail. In a recent issue that paper says, edito rially: , "Whether the Oregonian would mpport McKinley for re-election, or not, would depend on the course of the democratic party. Unfortu nately there is small reason to hope that the democratic party will recover from its insane ab errations till after it shall have been beaten again. It is penetrat ed through and through with the dangerous follies that found ex pression in the Chicago platform of IS'.JG, and till it abandons them the country could not afford to see it succeed. Another term of McKin ley would be better than monetary madness financial dishonor and in dustrial ruin." It would be a decidedly novel spectacle to Bee the big Portland champion of republicanism sup porting a democrat, but if matters should chance to so shape them selves that it would do so it would only be one of the encouraging signs of the times which begin to point to the fact that newspapers and people are not so irrevocably bound to party as they once were. Dr. Burns showed us a g&ckfull of windfalls that were larger than Crawford peaches." It is to be inferred that the doctor passed the "windfalls" around among the small boys of his neighborhood in the hope that they would incite anarchy beneath the juvenile waistband and produce a number of boysfull of paius larg er than Missouri pumpkins. Some of those Idaho fellows are pretty cate and, forsooth, great rustlers for business. A Good Scheme for Gilliam County. The smwsfnl result of the boring for artesian water on the George Wilson ranch in Wide hollow,' Yakima valley, furnishes a suggestion to the farmers of other districts, where artesian water has not yet been attemped. The entire cost of the well has not devolved on Mr. Wilson, as is generally supposed, but he entered in a combination with H. D. Winchester, Thos Fear, Frank McClure, and R'chard Strolmeh, by which each put 200 into a fund for the purpose of sinking for artesian water. Lota were drawn to decide upon whose farm the drilling should tie prosecuted, and the agreement provides that after the first well proves a success, a similar fund shall be created in a like way, and an other well drilled on the farm of anoth er member of the syndicate. The plan could be profitably applied here in Wal- a Walla valley where one good flowing ell would be of inestimable value to the small land holders. By this system of co-operation the expense would be bat sliihtlv felt by individuals. MiUon Eagle. This shows what sort of a character "the prisoner of Devil's Island" is. Ad versity has simply sweetened it, placed him alwve the level of profit and greed. He wants only justice and liberty, both of which he is entitled to. Dreyfus has suffered much and, under French law, is entitled to a great sum for false imprisonment, but he cannot stoop to accedting money as a con sideration for what he and his dear ones have undergone. Dreyfus has proven himself a great man, a pa tiot aud a true Frenchman, but nothing has so added to his stature as his last declaration, not to pro fit at the expense of his beloved country, that was involved through the corruption and unfaithfulness of her servants in high places. East Oregonian. Lower Rates on Wool. . The Northern Pacific has issued new freight card which reduces the tariff on "wool in grease in compressed bales' between Portland and New York or Bos ton, to 80 cents per 100 pounds. The former rate was 00 cents. All wools shipped from Portland are "in the grease," as there is no scouring works in this city. The staple reaches here from the sheep ranches in 300 pound sacks, which have been packed where the wool was shorn. The wool raiser bangs the bags in a frame and tramps the fleeces in by foot power, bot pressure brought to bear thus does not compress the fleeces very much, and they stiD occupy more room than the producer cares to pay for on its 3000 mlla trip to the Atlantic seaboard When the bags reach Portland, there' fore, the wool is baled, this time by uursepoaer which compresues lilXJ Keaiatar. rfiey Com e in Pairs DOMT TAKE A HEADER.
