THURSDAY. July 27. t. trtB OFFICIAL VMCSj OF GILLIAM COUNTY. OttCCrOfi. LOOK OUT FOR SMALLPOX. The appearance ft smallpox in our neighboring tarn of Heppner, should serve as a warning to our people that every precaution should b ! taken against tb foul disease. Ail authorities agree on the merits of vaccination as preventive, and with the disease within 40 miles of us, and spreading, and, if all re ports be true, pretty well distribut ed all over Eastern Oregon, itwould appear to be the part of wisdom for everybody in town to -vaccinated at once. It don't cost much and it way prevent an epidemic, to say nothing of loss of life and dis figurement of its victims who may . ultimately recover. Robert 0. Ingersoll, the noted agnostic lecturer and writer, whose death occurred a few days ago, wul long be remembered as one of the most gifted word painters of the century. While a great many con sider his life and work an unraiti gated curse to the human race, there are others who, while they may not endorse all of his belief or more correctly speaking, his unbelief have learned to love the simple granduer of his word weaving, among the warp and woof of which they have gleaned some of the choicest flowers of rhetoric, aud the purest pearls of thought It were useless, at this time to dis cuss his attitude towards the established forms of religion. He disbelieved in them and attacked them on every occasion with ridi cule and invective. Many of the dogmas and abuses which he most vigorously assailed have passed away or are, at best, but faint echos of a past age of superstition and intolerance, and if his shafts of rid icule, aye or bolts of blasphemy, have helped to shatter one relic of a remaining, useless superstition who will say that true religion has suffered by his life and work. The- shocking tragedy in Port land last week, in which a young girl was na ordered in a secluded spot in one of the parks, whither - she had gone clandestinely with a man whom her parents had forbid den her to go with, should be an awfut warning to young girls everywhere. The girl who spend: her evenings away from home, on the streets or in the parks, whose natural waywardness prompts her to ignore parental restraint or pa rental wishes, is on dangerous ground, and while iier life may not psy an immediate forfeit, as in the ease of poor Clara Fitch, she may wreck her life and lose that which is dearer to the true woman than life itself her purity, her honor and her good name. Sir Wilfred Laurier, premier of Canada, "swelled up" the other day while making a bombastic and belligerent address in the house of commons and declared that only arbitration or war can settle the Alaskan boundary dis pute, and he seemed disposed to speir'war" with a big W. The Canucks would better not get too funny in this matter. They would better 'Remember the Spain of 18 months ago. Dewey is coming and if our northern neigb bors get "sassy" be" is apt to fil lake Michigan so full of them some morning as to contaminate Chicago's water supply. TURN OUT THE GAS. On account of the extreme modesty of editors, coupled with the fact that the editor's wife in sists on going to all the dances, we trust the society leaders will de clare it to be the correct thing to have the lights turned out when the music starts. It is painful to contemplate the embarrassment from which the average editor would suffer, while trying to do justice to a plump 13-year-old partner, under the combined glare of the gaslight and the wife of his bosom. We beseech you, O lead ers of swelldom! On behalf of the modest man, turn down the gas. Ever see a cyclone, say? Bite the earth and munch away? Eat op houses, fences, trees, just as easy as you please? Get a hustle on its jaws? Swipe the earth with fiendish, claws? Hump its back and take a mo through an orchard just for fun? Switch its tail, and snort, and bound, just ike lightning o'er the ground? Get a swift move on its feet, racing for the winning heat? Then cavort ing, up and down, heeding no laws of the town? Born Joly 13, to tbe wife of Mike Dukek, a ten pound daughter. Mother and babe doing nicely and Mike well ws tbink he will get along now but be was qnit agitated at the time, whether for joy, or fear of future milliner bills, we can not say. ARLINGTON. Tbere was some escitement here last week on account of smallpox being in Heppner. A slight shock of an earth qrnke was felt here Booday by some bat was not generally felt. Mr. Bedford hat built a fine slaughter house oat at his chicken ranch having torn down tbe old one. The weather was very warm last week for a few days, the latter part of tbe week was very cool. Harvesting is in fall blait just now. Every farmer says tbere will be lot of wheat but not any No. 1. Tbe BaptiiU will build a $1500 church here this fall, most of toe money having been subscribed we are told. Tbe river is falling right along ami the danger of high water is panned and it ie some seven feet lower than it was at one time. There is aoc-at one third of the city's population' out in tbe mountains jut now for their summer vacation they all report having good timet. About 25 left this week for Mt. Adams.
