THURSDAY. Juno 8IS99. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COCNTY. OREGON. OOVO SCHOOLS It is matter of profound gratHfeatfon to Ihe penjile of Eastorn Orejrnn thirt B-iiu mvtiftl luks just Iwea. awartlrd to one ol her piibU -IhmK ) iimj Ootnmis imJM it the OhiaIia Tmn-Mimiipl JMpoaiUoa r lUo best eilneational dis play iiMute t greitl show, Ksliibks were marlc by wHiooW from nil over the United Siites. ami after a thorough ohu ass of theut nil, tUe judge taave dotmled thai Baker City Oregon is entitled to the iBtsilal for general escellenee. Blter City people iuwy well be proud d this high honor and while the people of the entire state wilt feel proud of Baker's triumph, the rest of us should ot stop there but. a far as possible, em uUte her eauple and eudeavor to make our schools as much like her as we can. une toe best rntenons by which to judge a people is by the high or low standard of their educational institu tions and while trie Trans-Mississippi Commissioners have declared that Eas tern Oregon has cue public school that U the best in the United States it is a matter of regret to many of us to know that we have many other similar insti tutions which are not the best. Baker City people will doubt lees con tinue to strive after new excellencies in their schools even though they now stand at tlie head of the class; how much more then should those of us who have schools that are inferior to theirs, feuive to improve the standard of ours. e can all help in this work; teachers, parents, pupils, directors, press and pulpit, but the people who vote and pay the school tax have the matter largely in their bands, and when ever a liberal policy prevails at the an nual school meeting we may expect to oe the schools begin to forge ahead a Jong the path to success which has been so Driiiiantly blazed by our neighbors of facer wiy.
