am . - ' the go::do:i globl THURSDAY. MAY 11, I80O-. THE OFFICIAL. PAPER OF CULUAM COUNTY, OREGON. OREGONIAN J.V JUSTICE. Aocai thv recant o.ntrage at Ward er. Id a. Ire, convimttcr) by mem br of the miners' union against tUo Banker Hul & Sullivan Min ing; Company, the Oregonian indul gtd in this unjvwt criticism of the etatcmii the state government. "How long will.tlw state of Idaho h content with a state government that is not equal to affording the slightest protection to mining mill owners in the preservation of tnoir property? The mining in dustry was closed out by the vio lence of the strikes of 1892 and now it has been blown up. How a young Binte like Idaho can be so foolish as to put up with a state government that cannot protect property, whose preservation is of importance to the growth of the state, is beyond all understanding. No man can aXord to invest large capital in Idaho, where ft is not onlv with out any protection from riot but where populist public opinion would not permit mine owner to protect tnemselves. The facts are that Goven or Steunenbere, and other state of ficials, have done all in their power to quel I the riot and to maintain order in Shoshone county, but that county being under full control of the miners union and being remote form the state capital, the real facts were perhaps withheld from the govenor for a time, but as soon as he learned that the county ofhcials were unable or un wiling to preserve order, be lost no time in calling on the president for federal troops. It is true that the state was not able to handle the situation without the aid of federal troops, but the Oregouian should know, if it does not, that the reason was not the fault of the state officers but because every avai lable man in the Idaho National Guard, enlisted in the volunteer army a yea' ago and is now in the Philippines fighting the battles of h'u country. Idaho is a grand young state and the Oregonian has no right to thus attempt to smirch the fair name of ber people, who, outside of .Shoshone county are as law abiding and loyal as any . people on earth Shoshone county undoubtedly con tains an element of citizens who are a disgrace to the state, but the vigorous measures now being taken by the authorities bids fair to rid the county and state of their pres ence, and when that isaccomplshed human life and property will be as safe in any part of Idaho as it is to day in Portland within the shadow of the Oregonian building. Since the above was put in type, we are glad to note that the Orego nian man has changed the colored spectacles he usually wears for a pair of clear ones and under their influence he has been inspired to write a lengthy editorial in praise of the prompt action of Governor Nteuneoberg in suppressing the Ward ner trouble. If the Oregonian man will continue the clear glass cure he will be alt right. The "embalmed" eourt of inqui ry into the army beef scandal has at last male its report public and. as has been predicted since the first day of its sitting, the report is nothing buta profuse coat of white wash for Alger and as much censure of General Miles as thev thought the people would stand. The memory of Alger and his can ned djg feed will be "embalmed" in the mini of his countrymen as bag as he lives and when tbey get a whackt his nibs they wont do a thing to him. Walking for a Wife. This morning tliftv arrivH here from Hood River voting man, Wm. F. im ton acx-ninpanii-cl bv his promwtive faili-er-in-lfw, a man of aliont 60 years m more. They walked all the way fron.
